OK. I'm not going to write another complaint about missing documentation. But -- let's face it:
* The pinned thread "OZ documentaion project" is dead, the link in post#1 is broken
* Most people seem to ignore the OESF wiki
* Those HOWTO articles don't really make good documentation. They're rather a list of "works for me" posts interrupted by questions with non-answers like "I'm not going to answer this here because this thread is not for questions".
* Things aren't stable here (as in debian stable). While it's great to get new software versions, along comes need for updated documentation.
* Most users are puzzled about where to look for info / ask questions because there are so many projects (OZ, OE, OPIE, GPE, upstream). This complexity is natural but provokes question in the wrong place. (The users usually get quickly answers here usually by on of the core developers, which is very nice but couldn't that time be used better?)

I wondered why people don't use the wiki much more. I know there are/were spam issues and thoughts about changing the software but the Wiki is still a good starting point, isn't it?

The wiki's content has some problems, too: Pages aren't always easy to find because too few other pages point there. Even worse, many pages have wrong names like "General" where it should "Networking via USB (General)" or "usbnet/general". Another big problem, most pages fail to say which software setup on the Z is required to make it work or the page names model and ROM version while it could actually be generalized. But, we can solve this. I think, when there's more attention on the wiki, it will be solved automatically. I'll help.

To make a long story short, I'd like to advocate something: Don't use OESF Forum for documentation, use the Wiki instead. I think, it won't be any more work in the short run and less in the long run.

Users or people asking questions:
* Whenever you have a question, check whether it's mentionend in https://www.oesf.org/index.php?title=Zaurus_How-To_Docs or http://www.openzaurus.org/wordpress/ or http://gpe.handhelds.org/documentation.phtml (for GPE) or http://opie.handhelds.org/cgi-bin/moin.cgi/OpieUserManual (for OPIE)
* When it was hard to find, add a link in a prominent place. If it was unclear, clearify.
* When it wasn't there and you solved it by searching the web or asking here or debugging, don't just tell the readers of OESF forum or your blog; tell everyone by contributing to (at least one of) the wikis. That way the knowledge is less volatile but can be updated when neccessary.

Everyone
* Distinguish between
1) general questions (stuff that you would expect in a HOWTO or FAQ) and
2) user specific problems (stuff that you would rather expect on a mailing list) when asking/answering questions. This is not trivial, but it helps a lot.

Developers or people answering questions:
* Distinguish the following cases
a) I know exactly what the problem is or
B) I have an idea about to howto fix / work around it.
* If B), say so. If successful and you have good faith that it wasn't only because of good luck, proceed, otherwise goto #.
* If 2) try to find out whether it can be tracked down to a general problem. If yes, proceed, otherwise goto #.
* Make sure good documentation exists.
* Don't answer the question, give a pointer to good documentation.
# Ask the user to write about the solution which worked for him.

These are just some thoughts I wrote at 3am (summer time, actually 2am). Share your ideas. I don't want to tell others how to do things. The imperatives above aren't rules just suggestions.

Cxx0 Hardware / Charging Level Monitor On C860/oz3.5.3
« on: March 20, 2006, 09:26:35 pm »
I'm using the Sharp 1700mAh accu.

Fully charged without Wifi it seems to last forever while the level slowly decreases. However when it hits around 50% it will rapidly discharge to 6% causing a battery warning.

When plugging the charger (while OZ/OPIE is suspended) it takes two tries to make the orange LED go on. Usually (but not always) when charging in suspended mode, the orange LED will remain on forever (24hours, AC adapter can do 2.5A at 5V). When I unsuspend the Z (with AC plugged) I get first a "critical" battery warning, then the software realizes the battery is actually at 100%.

I don't really care about the state of the LED and I can do without a precise estimate of the charge level but I don't want to harm the accu. Is there something wrong? Am I suposed not to suspend the Z while charging? Am I a suposed to unplug AC after 4 hours?

Maybe someone more familar with OPIE can tell me what "start date" is meant to do.

Angstrom & OpenZaurus / Status Of Sound Support, Mic Through Jack
« on: March 10, 2006, 06:35:15 pm »
I couldn't find any info about sound (drivers). I tried recording (headset) via opie record and arecord. Both failed. Opie record produces 0:00 length file, arecord displays ALSA errors.
Code: [Select]
# arecord -l
arecord: device list:2001: no soundcard found

Do I have to configure sound support? Or is ALSA missing in 3.5.3

User Request for Applications / Zaurus To Web Sync
« on: March 10, 2006, 05:58:18 pm »
Most PDA/PIM users sync or backup to their desktop/notebook computers if they backup at all. That's great if you use desktop PIM, it's OK if you use your own PC on a daily basis. I don't use any desktop PIM. Many people don't use personal computers at all; they use computers at home, office and/or school, but they don't/can't install extra software; those computers don't always offer reliable and private long-term storage. PC software/storage was partly replaced by web services (for some, not for me yet). However those web services are not really suited for use with the Z: small screen, not always connected, available browsers not Firefox/MSIE* compatible, ...

My idea is to connect the both: Zaurus/PIM to Web/PIM sync without need for a PC.

Is there any method known? I'm thinking of a PHP calendar/addressbook application which can be configured to accept all fields that OPIE/GPE have and offers a API. Then we can a write some software to run on the Z and connect to the web server by https. (Today you can usually get web access where ever you are, IP MASQ or mandatory proxies are not a problem. Servers that can run PHP/MySQL apps are wide spread.)

* I do know that Firefox does run on the Z and MSIE sucks.

Accessories / Dmesg: "card Has Unknown Mmca Version 4"
« on: March 07, 2006, 05:24:05 pm »
After I decided I wouldn't like SD anymore for their closed-source only policy I bought  1 Gig MMC card, to my surprise it was reasonably priced and theoretically fast (15MBit/s). OK it's a "plus" and I don't know whether Z supports "plus", but I can live with "minus" speed. It's works well in my camera's SD slot and not slower than my SD card.

Under OZ 3.5.3, kernel 2.6, I get the "mmc0:card has unknown MMCA version 4" in dmesg. Anyone familar with that? They should be downwards compatible; thus, I hope it would be sufficient to tell who ever issued that error to treat version 4 the same as prior versions. Any hints?

Accessories / Is 5.15v Dc (idle) Safe?
« on: March 07, 2006, 05:45:20 am »
Hi all,
bought an AC adapter. Asked the (clueless) vendor whether 5V meant 5.00V+-0 or something else. Vendor said, sure it's exactly 5 volts.

Now I got it and my voltmeter says 5.15V. Rumor has it that anything <5.3V is safe but the adapter wasn't too expensive and I'm afraid that loaded it could have voltage peaks. Any hints.

It's rated 2.5A @ 5V ("stabilized"). The product is called "Electronic 2.5".

Angstrom & OpenZaurus / Sd Storages Card: Why Mount -o Sync?
« on: March 05, 2006, 06:27:25 pm »
general questions

1. OZ Wordpress: Root on SD says we cannot run use "filesystem buffering" because crappy closed source drivers are used? Is this still the case?

2. The same article says later one should not mount 'sync'. So the "filesystem buffering" issue is not linked with 'mount -o sync', right?

3. Then, why does OZ generally mount cards with 'sync'? To my knowledge sync is still not really implemented for (v)fat and sync has disadvantages (speed, damages flash faster).

4. The article quoted above suggests keeping the (FAT) filesystem and loopback mount a disk image for speed reasons. Will 'eject card' properly unmount both?

5. People tend to use either FAT (obviously for compatibility reasons) or ext2/3 on storage cards? Why is this? Shouldn't jffs2 be a better choice?

I'm about to buy a big SD/MMC card

6. I found compatibility lists but they were pretty old (for collie, sharp rom), are there known problems with cards <=1GB. Should one consider speed? Decide by which info?

7. I think of keeping the most important stuff (PIM software and /home) on internal flash, additional software on SD (by ipkg-link). Is this a good idea?

Angstrom & OpenZaurus / Oz (current 3.5.3) Unstable
« on: March 04, 2006, 04:14:52 pm »
Hi,
I got a Zaurus only for one reason: It runs linux and there seems to be an active developers and users community. I knew I needed some time on my hand to get it all working, a used Japanese Linux PDA ist not comparable with a localized vendor-supported Win/Apple/whatever device, but it's getting frustrating.

After quite some hassle (partitioning and update.sh) I finally got OZ/OPIE running. It works with WLAN and all as long as you don't touch it, but

1. Installing packages with GUI package manager is near impossible. Usually there are either ipkg errors (such as downloading fails) or the package manager will segfault. I don't think I ran out of memory, got 64MiB. System Infos shows Memory usage slightly above 50% while installing. I can install with 'ipkg install foo'. (This is not easily reproducable; after reboot, things are likely to work better.) Maybe I should file a bug against the package-manager but I don't know all the info that should go into a good bug report (like how ti reproduce).

2. I had to reboot (by removing batteries) my Z quite often to "solve" problems: Last time, the screen just went white while I was using qpe-gaim. Whatever I did (keyboard, touch screen), the screen stayed white, the backlight brightness changes. What is that?

edit: 3. qpe-gaim segfaults from time to time. This time after the segfault messae box appeared, OPIE crashed (could not even FN+left arrow)

Except for those issues which I hope to solve, I decided for OZ because I want:
1. a solid stable base system
2. many apps (but adapted for Z screen size)
3. platform to develop for/on
4. an upgrade path (keep data when migrating to a newer version)
Is OZ/current good for me? Is there something like 'debian stable' (older but well-tested)?

Angstrom & OpenZaurus / Flashing Oz To Zaurii With Non-original Rom
« on: February 19, 2006, 03:05:54 pm »
The installation notes clearly state: Ensure that your C7×0 machine has a standard flash partitioning (e.g. as it was originally), flashing may fail if this is not the case

Before I start, can someone please confirm the NAND Flash Back from Maintenance Menu contains really the whole flash inlcuding partitioning.

So, whenever I'm about to install OZ, I'm required to go back to Sharp partitioning style. The only way I'm aware of to do so, is grabbing a NAND Flash backup somewhere. Restore it. Install OZ. Why can't we make it easier to get OZ, like flashing only once. (Nowadays who's using Sharp ROMs?)

First idea: OZ is distributed as model specific images. All data will be erased during upgrade anyways. Then, why can't developers or early adaptors just make a NAND Flash Backup of a fresh installation and distribute this?

Second idea: When updating, we kind of boot from CF/SD, this means we can do about anything while updating. Why can't the installer script just overwrite whatever partition table it finds?

The perfect installer script...
... first examins the old installation, espially check for know distributions, i.e. OZ current version -1 in particular
... checks whether what the user requests is sane
... identifies installed packages
... backs up all user data to RAM or SD/CF
... creates partitions as required by the new distribution
... if the old installation was known / compatible restore basic configuration, especially networking
... boot the new configuration
... if the old installation was known / compatible, install all packages that were there before upgrade in a version suitable for the new ROM
... restore user data

The more than perfect installer script doesn't require anything as risky or cumbersome as flashing, repartitioning, hard resetting, Japanese menus...

ATM I have no idea whether something like this is at all possible but on the other hand I can't see why not. At least I think you can see (and comment) on the goals of my perfect installer script:
Whatever you start with, there is always a working installation in the end.
Provide an upgrade path for OZ users.
Ignore any Sharp software design decissions (In Europe new and used units are sold without a Sharp ROM)

Accessories / European/world Voltage Ac Adapter
« on: February 19, 2006, 06:48:34 am »
I know TRIsoft sell's EA-70S for about EUR50 and I know people here use PSP AC adapters. And I assume any good regulated 5V supply would do, but I do want something as cool as the 100V adapter (EA-72) that ships with Zaurii. I've never seen an AC adapter that small (and it does 1A DC output).

USB power is not really a solution as I have an SL-C860 which doesn't have a standard USB socket and don't want to carry two cables (Zaurus-USB and USB-AC).

For sure, I don't want to burn my Zaurus. So something tested with, approved for Z is worth a few EUR more.

edit: found solar power thread

Sharp ROMs / Strange Behaviour (crash) On Unsuspend
« on: February 18, 2006, 01:48:19 pm »
Cacko 1.23 full on SL-C860.

In Light&Power I have enabled auto suspend. Nothing special, no CF/SD/USB. The only non-standard thing I did was setting unix password for zaurus and root and trying to disallow sudo in /home/etc/sudoers (my fault, but seurityis inportant, everywhere)

Sometimes the device goes suspend while I'm working, espacially while using Konsole und keyboard. That's very annoying. Is auto-suspend only sensitive to the touch screen?

Then, unsuspending does usually not work at first try. Sometimes pressing the side power key doesn't have any effect at all. Sometimes, it seems the device goes back to suspend a spilt-second after unsuspend. (Backlight blinks once. When CF Wifi is plugged, the WiFi link LED blinks as well.). Sometimes it works (about 1/3 of tries).

After I enabled passcode protection, things went worse. The behaviour above can still be observed but I can be even worse: Display on, "Enter passcode" shown, almost dead (touchscreen and keyboard ineffective, Power key ineffective, changing the screen from PDA to laptop style doesn't trigger screen rotation, display always on).

However, I can ssh/usbnet works to my surprise. There is are processes like:
  388 ?        SN     0:00 /usr/bin/sudo /usr/local/bin/apm.rom --suspend
  403 ?        SN     0:00 sh -c apm --suspend
  405 ?        SN     0:00 /usr/bin/sudo /usr/local/bin/susp.sh
which reappear after being killed.

Changed /etc/sudoers back to default. Killed
  437 ?        SN     0:00 /usr/bin/sudo /usr/local/bin/susp.sh

Situation now: Display off. ssh connection broken. Unsuspend works and I get the "enter passcode" dialog which is again not sensitive to touchscreen or screen rotation. auto-suspend after seconds.
Once appearently the touchscreen worked once, now I have eight asterix below enter passcode when I unsuspend, nothing else.

What's wrong here? Are similar problems known? I know, I messed with sudo and killing proccesses but the problem existed before. Is it cacko specific?

This may or may not be linked to Luss Screen Saver And Auto Power Off

Linux Issues / Ip Masquerading For Zaurus/usbnet
« on: February 17, 2006, 06:38:14 pm »
Any Howto out there seems to assume 2.4.x kernels. 2.6.x should be similar but it doesn't work for me. What kernel and modules do I need for IP MASQ?

The machine in question runs 2.6.8, the kernel has compiled in:
CONFIG_NETFILTER=y
CONFIG_IP_NF_IPTABLES=y

iptables was not used here before. Appearently the iptables command tries 'modprobe ip_tables' which fails. Full output (to any command):
FATAL: Module ip_tables not found.
iptables v1.2.11: can't initialize iptables table `nat': Table does not exist (do you need to insmod?)
Perhaps iptables or your kernel needs to be upgraded.

Installing the ip_tables module won't help (not surprisingly):
FATAL: Error inserting ip_tables (/lib/modules/2.6.8-jk20050516/kernel/net/ipv4/netfilter/ip_tables.ko): Device or resource busy

I want a simple IPMASQ to link Zaurus and dial-up PPP.

Software / (up-to-date) Documentation Heavily Needed
« on: February 16, 2006, 05:22:04 pm »
Hi everyone,
I think I have a fairly good knowledge of linux, that is assuming a typical server which's hardware is supported by stock kernerls. I never used all those fancy things from USB to wireless. Just to let you know where I am. Next week I REALLY want to have a working Zaurus with wireless and all: Zaurus vs N770 comparision is on the schedule.

At first glance I was about to start with OZ/OPIE and drop the idea for lack of documentation. There is oefs.org wiki which seems written with poodle (and only poodle) in mind except for the model specific pages which mostly hardware related. Not good. There's openzaurus.sf.net which has some basic doc but it's scary to a newbie (like you when it says you must install Sharp stock ROM first or your Zaurus may burn in hell) and not well organized. Then, there is some good documention for the projects OE or OPIE but it's focused on development. You'll find more sources with google but there are mostly like "Look that's my zaurus. Your mileage may vary."

pdaXrom looks good. Nice web site, all in one place. Applications I know. Too good? First, I want a PDA, not a PDA trying to be a (XGA) desktop. And second, hmm, I get the feeling pdaXrom must be complicated to setup (stupid me, I worked as a system administrator). So I delayed trying pdaXrom.

Cacko. Hmm, stock ROM compatible, OPIE, good driver support. Looks like a good point to start with. Repartitioned. Flashed. Worked. Not it's getting to setting things up from usbnet (done but took me ages) to wireless (net yet). But -- no documentation at all? Is this at all possible?

I'm not blaming the developers. They did good work and probably a lot of it. I can't blame sharp because they wrote a (Japanese) manual. But something must be done about it. I volunteer. I've seen discussions about writing doc but none seems active.

What?

* The Zaurus BIOS, i.e. the Japanes or English menus you get by Secret_Key_Combinations (found nowhere)
* using interfaces: CF, USB, Bluetooth. ("It should work" is not enough)

How?

* be general, discuss differences between models and distributions where neccessary
* be verbose, but point the user to quick solutions where available.

Theese are just my thoughts. What I have always like about FLOSS is it's great documentation. I can't write the ultimative Zaurus user manual. No one can unless (s)he's really got too much time. But we should make sure to document as much as we can. I'm trying to correct the wiki and expand it where needed. This could be done whenever a forum questions is answered. Small steps.
