Angstrom & OpenZaurus / Email With Gnupg And Offline Reader For Gpe
« on: April 03, 2006, 05:18:00 pm »
(Most of) my current mail is on a IMAP server. On my desktop box I use offlineimap and mutt, which is pretty cool when you have a keyboard, unlimited disk space and broadband. While it's possible to do the same on Z, I'd appreciate a GPE solution. I tried Sylpheed, which is good, but it was even better if it was better customized for use with stylus and small screen.

What I am looking for is a client, that will download *new* mails in imap/INBOX, so I can read them while disconnected. But it's not the best idea (though possible with 1GB MMC card) to store *all* mails on the Z.

GnuPG, gpe-contacts integration, filters would be cool. Any hints?

You can use OE Wiki - but please create pages like OpenZaurus/SomeThing, OpenZaurus/HowToDoIt etc.
[div align=\"right\"][a href=\"index.php?act=findpost&pid=121559\"][{POST_SNAPBACK}][/a][/div]

Are going to encourage using OE Wiki OpenZaurs/whatever or will it be more a less ignored by everyone?

Maybe this could be part of Hrw's CF-card database he has suggested?

Added it on the wiki as a first step.

Fine, then setup a wiki on OZ.org
The wordpress is effectively a wiki, just one that requires username + password access.

Is that such a problem?
[div align=\"right\"][{POST_SNAPBACK}][/a][/div]

Not at all. If you and hrw and whoever cares about OZ.org don't mind giving everyone access, preferably by a simple procedure which doesn't require manual work for you each time someone wants to do something.

The problem I see with the OZ.org WP attempt is that it looks official (written or approved by the developers). I trust OZ.org more than a OESF wiki. But if you are willing to be editor, why not?

Would everyone (in this thread) agree to use and avocate [a href=\"http://oe.handhelds.org/cgi-bin/moin.cgi/OpenZaurus]http://oe.handhelds.org/cgi-bin/moin.cgi/OpenZaurus[/url] ?
Then, hrw/lardman can give OZ.org WP accounts to most active wiki editors...

Angstrom & OpenZaurus / Translate Gpe Into New Languages

If it's simple, I'd like to fix the German translation.

New OZ.org looks nice, but I agree with obergix. If you want user contributions we'll need something wiki like.

That's fine and well... but I keep saying that nothing will beat a wiki... unless there is a team with a clear path drawn for the documentation tasks where one can easily know what to document, when and where...

Unless these requirements are met, I think a wiki is necessary...
[div align=\"right\"][a href=\"index.php?act=findpost&pid=121346\"][{POST_SNAPBACK}][/a][/div]

BTW: Can someone explain to me what OESF is and why you oppose using OESF wiki for OZ docs?

Angstrom & OpenZaurus / Screen Rotation And Arrow Keys On Clamshell
« on: March 26, 2006, 07:58:29 pm »
After a reboot (killing X is not enough) things are mostly working:
+ screen rotation applet in the bottom bar works
+ arrow keys work in "desktop" and tetris (and mostly everywhere)
- arrow keys in sokoban don't work. They work but their effect is rotated by 90°
- in "screen setup" the effect of portrait/landscape is swaped

After some time (don't know how to reproduce) things go worse:
- screen rotation applet has no effect
- arrow keys' effect is rotated by 90° EVERYWHERE (tested sokoban, tetris and desktop)
- apps behave as if left-arrow was constantly pressed at an interval of about 1sec
- "screen setup" thinks we are in potrait mode (while we are in landscape actually) and trying to change it has no effect.

People pointed out this was a due to missing keymaps but is it really? The keys in question work mostly. The software must know about how to match key codes.

Where am I supposed to file this bug? GPE?

OK. I'm not going to write another complaint about missing documentation. But -- let's face it:
* The pinned thread "OZ documentaion project" is dead, the link in post#1 is broken
* Most people seem to ignore the OESF wiki
* Those HOWTO articles don't really make good documentation. They're rather a list of "works for me" posts interrupted by questions with non-answers like "I'm not going to answer this here because this thread is not for questions".
* Things aren't stable here (as in debian stable). While it's great to get new software versions, along comes need for updated documentation.
* Most users are puzzled about where to look for info / ask questions because there are so many projects (OZ, OE, OPIE, GPE, upstream). This complexity is natural but provokes question in the wrong place. (The users usually get quickly answers here usually by on of the core developers, which is very nice but couldn't that time be used better?)

I wondered why people don't use the wiki much more. I know there are/were spam issues and thoughts about changing the software but the Wiki is still a good starting point, isn't it?

The wiki's content has some problems, too: Pages aren't always easy to find because too few other pages point there. Even worse, many pages have wrong names like "General" where it should "Networking via USB (General)" or "usbnet/general". Another big problem, most pages fail to say which software setup on the Z is required to make it work or the page names model and ROM version while it could actually be generalized. But, we can solve this. I think, when there's more attention on the wiki, it will be solved automatically. I'll help.

To make a long story short, I'd like to advocate something: Don't use OESF Forum for documentation, use the Wiki instead. I think, it won't be any more work in the short run and less in the long run.

Users or people asking questions:
* Whenever you have a question, check whether it's mentionend in https://www.oesf.org/index.php?title=Zaurus_How-To_Docs or http://www.openzaurus.org/wordpress/ or http://gpe.handhelds.org/documentation.phtml (for GPE) or http://opie.handhelds.org/cgi-bin/moin.cgi/OpieUserManual (for OPIE)
* When it was hard to find, add a link in a prominent place. If it was unclear, clearify.
* When it wasn't there and you solved it by searching the web or asking here or debugging, don't just tell the readers of OESF forum or your blog; tell everyone by contributing to (at least one of) the wikis. That way the knowledge is less volatile but can be updated when neccessary.

Everyone
* Distinguish between
1) general questions (stuff that you would expect in a HOWTO or FAQ) and
2) user specific problems (stuff that you would rather expect on a mailing list) when asking/answering questions. This is not trivial, but it helps a lot.

Developers or people answering questions:
* Distinguish the following cases
a) I know exactly what the problem is or
B) I have an idea about to howto fix / work around it.
* If B), say so. If successful and you have good faith that it wasn't only because of good luck, proceed, otherwise goto #.
* If 2) try to find out whether it can be tracked down to a general problem. If yes, proceed, otherwise goto #.
* Make sure good documentation exists.
* Don't answer the question, give a pointer to good documentation.
# Ask the user to write about the solution which worked for him.

These are just some thoughts I wrote at 3am (summer time, actually 2am). Share your ideas. I don't want to tell others how to do things. The imperatives above aren't rules just suggestions.

[div align=\"right\"][{POST_SNAPBACK}][/a][/div]

Hrw, I appreciate all your work on OZ but this is NOT helpfull.

1. microsoft/linux knows how to set up usbnet in general. The problem lies either in OZ3.5.4 or in GPE. The linked thread is older than 3.5.4 and not GPE specific

2. in [a href=\"https://www.oesf.org/forums/index.php?showtopic=11785&pid=106068]https://www.oesf.org/forums/index.php?showt...1785&pid=106068[/url] lardman says clearly "this is a thread giving details about how to get connections working, not to ask about how to get them working; start a new thread." The thread doesn't seem to answer the problem

3. I had the same problem. While OZ3.5.3/OPIE worked, OZ3.5.4/GPE wouldn't. The solution for me was 'modprobe g_ether' and replug USB, but I'm not going to add this to a How-To unless someone confirms this is the "right way" to do it. For me, it's a bug work around. BTW: What is the USB applet in GPE supposed to do if not make sure that g_ether gets loaded?

I would consider updating to 3.5.4.1-alpha1 or atleast 3.5.4 and then test does those problems still exist.

OZ 3.5.3 + 2.6.11 is now nearly year old code..
[div align=\"right\"][a href=\"index.php?act=findpost&pid=119982\"][{POST_SNAPBACK}][/a][/div]

Hmm. I was going to wait for 3.5.4.1 final. I'll give 3.5.4 a try when I find the time.

2.6.11 from OZ3.5.3

BTW: LED works as expected when charging without suspending.

Gulp - I've heard nasty things about using chargers with too high a capacity - I think the Z relies on current limiting within the charger. I'd recommend you use a charger that can't supply more than 1A, and I hope you haven't fried your charging circuit or reduced the life of the battery too much in the mean time.

I don't think you are right here. First, power sources don't have "capacities". The most common are constant voltage sources, the provide a stable voltage (however only if the current drawn is with a valid range, mine is designed for 0...2.5A). Constant voltage sources don't regulate the current by any means. It's generally a bad idea to "charge" accus by plugging a constant voltage source. That's why devices have charging circuits to control charging currents.

Then, there are constant current sources. To provide a constant current the voltage will vary. You can charge NiMH or NiCd batteries with a constant current source given you know when to stop. However, if plug a constant current source to an (idle) device, you'll probably burn it because of the high voltage.

There are devices that can limit both current and voltage (used in labs). Basicly those switch between constant current and constant voltage mode by prefering whatever gives lower figures. If you set such a power supply to 5.0V and 1.0A, what you get is NOT 5.0V/1.0A but either 5.0V and current <1.0A or 1.0A and voltage < 5.0V. I agree, they make good safety nets. But we don't ever want the voltage to be below 5.0V.

I don't know anything about Sharps charging circuit. It may well be that it behaves different if the current is limited and it may even be that this intended by Sharp, but I doubt it. Good charging circuits should control currents more precisely. However for any precise control you need a well defined basis to start with. As dealing with constant voltages is much easier than with constant currents, device designer choose a constant voltage as their basis.

BTW: The official world voltage adapter by Sharp does 2A, only the tiny Japanese one is rated 1A. IIRC USB provides usually a not so stable 5V (500mA max) and you can charge some Zaurii via USB.

If do know more than I know, let me know. I agree that adapters which cannot do high currents are kind of a safety feature (such as disconnecting from the net gives you saftey from viruses) but what kills devices is usually too high voltages. (High charging current may decrease the batteries lifetime, but firstly this should be influenced by the choices of an adapter and secondly it's not as bad as frying the Z.) Low (unstable) voltages (as from current limits) usually don't do much harm but you can't expect the battery will get charged properly.

Cxx0 Hardware / Charging Level Monitor On C860/oz3.5.3
« on: March 20, 2006, 09:26:35 pm »
I'm using the Sharp 1700mAh accu.

Fully charged without Wifi it seems to last forever while the level slowly decreases. However when it hits around 50% it will rapidly discharge to 6% causing a battery warning.

When plugging the charger (while OZ/OPIE is suspended) it takes two tries to make the orange LED go on. Usually (but not always) when charging in suspended mode, the orange LED will remain on forever (24hours, AC adapter can do 2.5A at 5V). When I unsuspend the Z (with AC plugged) I get first a "critical" battery warning, then the software realizes the battery is actually at 100%.

I don't really care about the state of the LED and I can do without a precise estimate of the charge level but I don't want to harm the accu. Is there something wrong? Am I suposed not to suspend the Z while charging? Am I a suposed to unplug AC after 4 hours?

Can I take the occassion to ask if anyone would explain what the differences between OpenZaurus and pdaXrom are?

I've seen the feed features an X11 section and you use GPE, so is it basically like pdaXrom in the sense that you run X apps with no prob?
[div align=\"right\"][{POST_SNAPBACK}][/a][/div]

The benefit is that things in OZ are designed to work on a PDA where as things in pdaXrom are just crosscompiled. If you do want to run X app which have not been adapted for a PDA, you may have more luck with pdaXrom, it's like a linux notebook.

I hate to quote my own work but I wrote a [a href=\"https://www.oesf.org/index.php?title=Distributions]wiki page[/url] on this question.

Maybe someone more familar with OPIE can tell me what "start date" is meant to do.
