I have the link right now but it freezes halfway through the map download and then just terminates. Have been unable to find any logs which might explain things. Thanks for the help and I will try this all again in a few days.

I'm having the same problem.  It's using the directory on the SD card that I linked to, so it's not a space issue.  I was having intermittent problems with my 'Net connection and thought that might be the problem, but it appears that this is not the case.

I'm using a cheap USB GPS bought on Ebay. It uses the cp2101 driver which is available on latest 2.6 kernels. It works fine, but on a 2.4 kernel I have to stop GPS apps before unpluging the receiver if I don't want to see an OOPS.
Perfect with a Wifi CF and Kismet for wardriving !
Cheers,
  Ludo.

So it does work with 2.4 kernel, as long as you stop the GPS apps before unplugging?  Does this require a powered USB hub, or can this run directly off the Zaurus?  The manufacturer's site only states that it is "low power."

Fairly pricey shipping rates to the U.S., probably because the seller appears to be based in Singapore.  But if the winning bid is relatively low, I would certainly be interested.

Besides war driving, does the Z support any decent mapping / navigation software?  I got the impression that there isn't much available.

Antikx- Are you also planning to use this simply for war driving, or is there some other clever application you have in mind?

Deals and Great Z Buys / Great Deal On New Z Batteries.

So, what's the difference between Lithium-Ion and Lithium-Polymer?

I notice that the item depicted in the eBay advert is Li-Poly, whereas the original battery for the Z is Li-Ion.  It seems that different cell chemistries often have different charge / recharge performance.  Can I assume that the Li-Poly is a suitable replacement for the stock battery?

Hi,

which battery are you talking about?
I could only find 3.7V PSP packs in the web.

Do you want to connect it directly, which means inside the c3k or are you gonna use the DC connector at the back?

If you use the DC-input, let me notice something about input voltages in general.
Normally, handheld devices can handle voltage levels +10% above and -10% under the nominal voltage level at their DC input connectors and i think it's the same with the c3k devices from sharp.
This means a voltage up to 5.5V should not damage the device.

But be aware, that this the absolute maximum value!!!
Take care of this fact if the battery is fully charged and may deliver a higher voltage level.

If you are unsure, you could drop the voltage by a schottky diode in series to the battery  .

Greets,

scholbert

I'm not an electrical engineer and have limited knowledge of batteries, but I believe that Li-Ion batteries require circuits to regulate the discharge rate of the battery.  On some batteries, the circuits are incorporated into the battery package.  Other batteries (this seems to include the battery in my C1000) have no onboard regulating circuit and this function is performed by the device, itself.

My point is that you may wish to verify that with someone knowledgable about this topic whether it would be a good idea to connect your battery to the DC connector on your Z.  (I'm sure that this was your plan, rather than hooking it to the interior battery terminals.)  I'm not sure if there would be a potential to fry your Z or perhaps damage the battery (remember Dell laptops?), but it's probably better to play it safe.

Today, I deleted /usr/bin/ as well as a large portion of /usr/share/ by sudo tar tzf /mnt/card/data.tar.gz|sudo rm -r. In retrospect, I obviously shouldn't have done that. I'm quite stressed and annoyed that I have no recent backups, so I was hoping that there was some way to recover files from my flash. I'm running pdaXrom beta3 on a C3100 with the full-size root partition.

Not the fastest burning setup ever but sure beats not being able to burn at all!

Shame about that lack of DVD-RAM writing support, but i noticed that the latest brasero supports a different new backend in addition to cdrecord, and as you say things might be different under 2.6 anyway.

I didn't know that any usb1.1 dvd writers had been made.  I'm sure you will be able to get it to work if there are.
[div align=\"right\"][a href=\"index.php?act=findpost&pid=144417\"][{POST_SNAPBACK}][/a][/div]
I'm pretty sure that the Zaurus port is USB2.0, but I know it doesn't support the full speed of 2.0.  I'm guessing this is a 2.0 protocol with 1.1 speed, or something like that.

Zaurus - pdaXrom / Help With Nedit [solved]
« on: October 04, 2006, 09:46:49 pm »

1. How can I start nedit in maximized-window mode? On startup, the window is larger than the screen, making it difficult to work. Ctrl-Alt-M helps, but I'd like to avoid having to press this key combo each time I start up nedit.
[div align=\"right\"][a href=\"index.php?act=findpost&pid=143112\"][{POST_SNAPBACK}][/a][/div]

I'm using nedit as my primary editor on my desktop.  There's a command-line option for setting initial window geometry.  I'm assuming that this will work for the Zaurus version, as well.

-geometry geometry (or -g geometry)
The initial size and/or location of editor windows.  The argument geometry has the form:

   [<width>x<height>][+|-][<xoffset>[+|-]<yoffset>]

where <width> and <height> are the desired width and height of the window, and <xoffset> and <yoffset> are the distance from the edge of the screen to the window, + for top or left, - for bottom or right.  -geometry can be specified for individual files on the command line.

BTW, how long does nedit take to load on the Z?  If it's fairly snappy, I may switch from Leafpad.  For most tasks, however, I would be frustrated if there's a significant lag in opening.

User Request for Applications / Request Bestcrypt

OK, turns out I had two different versions of libfloat.so.1 and after getting rid of one this works just fine. Use sidmoraes' package (attached to his first response) and also the ipk he linked to and Bestcrypt works perfectly on the C3000.
[div align=\"right\"][{POST_SNAPBACK}][/a][/div]
Do you know where you got the other version of libfloat.so.1?  I'm getting the same error you had mentioned earlier:

/usr/lib/libkgsha.so: undefined symbol: _divsi3
Can not Load Key Generators

I'm wondering if there are two packages containing libfloat and if I have the wrong version.  I'd like to find some decent encryption software, but I haven't found one that works.  I'm running pdaxrom beta3 on a C1000 and I have libfloat 1.0 installed.

Also, it looks like BestCrypt is not freeware.  I'd be willing to spend for decent encryption, but I noticed on [a href=\"http://www.jetico.com/order.htm]Jetico's site[/url] that they offer "License Renewal."  Does that mean that this would only be good for a year or so and I'd have to essentially "re-purchase" it regularly?  I don't "subscribe" to software like this because I've seen too many companies go out of business.  I'm not going to put myself in a position where I am invested in a utility / application (time, effort and data) and then the company goes under, forces a (possibly incompatible) upgrade, or discontinues support for a specific version and the software becomes unusable.

Zaurus - pdaXrom / Beta 3 Fixes, Customs, Contrib

Hi, I have the same issue for both cards. Just flashes.
I'll try this fix however when I read the notes it's all for beta 1, 2 and 3 but nothing about 4.
[div align=\"right\"][{POST_SNAPBACK}][/a][/div]
I know that I got my Symbol card working in beta4, but I can't seem to find my installation log for that step of the process.  Anyway, I think the following threads might be helpful for beta4:
[a href=\"https://www.oesf.org/forums/index.php?showtopic=19301&view=findpost&p=127294]https://www.oesf.org/forums/index.php?showt...ndpost&p=127294[/url]
https://www.oesf.org/forums/index.php?showt...ndpost&p=129449

Also, there was some issue with beta4 regarding the names you could use for the profiles if you use the Lan & Wifi utility.  The profiles had to be named after the interface you were using, otherwise they wouldn't work.  I used eth0 as the name for my WiFi profile because I was having some problem with even wlan0, which should work according to the following post:
https://www.oesf.org/forums/index.php?showt...ndpost&p=126615

I believe the following are more specific to beta3, but this way you've got it all at your fingertips:
https://www.oesf.org/forums/index.php?showt...ndpost&p=124796
https://www.oesf.org/forums/index.php?showt...ndpost&p=117251

Good luck!

I made the jump to Beta4 and now I can't get my wifi working. Just a flashing light.
Anyway, I am going to try to find a way to get back to 2.4 and install Beta3 after I give the card one more shot before I take the trip back.
[div align=\"right\"][{POST_SNAPBACK}][/a][/div]
Which card are you trying to use?  You list two in your sig, and I know that I managed to get my Symbol working under beta4.  You could try looking at the following thread:
[a href=\"https://www.oesf.org/forums/index.php?showtopic=19683]https://www.oesf.org/forums/index.php?showtopic=19683[/url]

I don't know about the Ambicom.

pdaXrom: NoteCase
Similar to TuxCards, NoteCase also organize notes hierarchically.  Although the interface is less good-looking than TuxCards' and does not have date/time insertion, NoteCase can take  web links and file links. Export to HTML and TXT work well, despite the simple formatting. It can also import from XML, which I haven't tried. It is GTK app so the current multi-language inputmethods (SCIM, UIM, etc) work very well with it.
Developer's site: http://notecase.sourceforge.net/
Previous discussion: https://www.oesf.org/forums/index.php?showtopic=16816
(There is also a simple GTK journal taking app Cire, which I also like very much, discussed in this thread)
[div align=\"right\"][a href=\"index.php?act=findpost&pid=137665\"][{POST_SNAPBACK}][/a][/div]
Can I assume that the same NoteCase data file is readable in all versions of the app (Zaurus, Linux, Win)?

And the developer's site mentions encryption, but I didn't see any details.  Do you know if this is relatively strong encryption?  Or something pathetic like an XOR function?

all you need is a 3 pin regulator, one pin is Vin one is gnd and the other is Vout

a low drop out regulator provides regulation at voltages above Vin -Vout => 0.2 the 7805 you need about a 1v diffrence, so if its a 5v vout then you get regulation down to 5.2v then it cuts out and you will get 5.2v going into your device
Judging by the specs I've seen on most of these, I think I'm going to go with a 7.5V - 9V pack.  The LDO regulators I've seen don't have a high current capacity, with one odd exception I found on the Maxim site.

Quote
the erason i mention that is that some Z's are picky about thier input voltage and will blow the charging circutry if you give it more than 5.1v
+/-0.1V?!?  You've got to be kidding!  Most of the specs I've seen are +/-0.2V, although I'm assuming these are limits and the unit generally provides something more accurate.  Yikes.

Quote
you dont even need beradboard if you just have insulated wires.

good forms of insulation i have persanally used in a live PC:
heat shrink (the best)
stickytape (good in a pinch)
bluetack: the most handy discovery i ever made
What's this bluetack stuff?  Never heard of it.

Quote
Z current draw is 1A max, it can go higher but you wont domadge your Z if you cant provide enogh, the 7805 is ratted at 1A and will go higher in most cases (you can make it do 25A if you read the data sheet
I found a catalog from BGMicro lying around.  I checked out specs on a couple of the regulators they carry and the LM323 looks interesting.  It will provide up to 3A.  I'm looking for something that can handle more than the Z needs because I'm planning to put this all together into a little USB docking station.  I'd like to provide enough power to comfortably run the Z plus at least a keyboard and mouse, but I may end up connecting something else, too.

BTW, how much heat do you think something like this would dissipate?  Would a heatsink be advisable?

Quote
well i hope that is all you need to get satrted, a bit more than you needed but at least you are aware of the issues. if you have any problems then just post back, PM me or if you live in australia near sydney i am willing to make one up for you (i have tha parts here to build about 20)
[div align=\"right\"][a href=\"index.php?act=findpost&pid=140461\"][{POST_SNAPBACK}][/a][/div]
Thanks for the help and the offer.  I think I'm on the right track.  I've got a proto board (or whatever you call the breadboard-like thing for mocking up temporary circuits) and plan to test the circuit before soldering and hooking it to my Z.  If I run into a problem I might pester you again.

Zaurus - pdaXrom / Sd Cards >1gb Work In Pdaxrom!

Wow, thanks for the good news!  I will buy a new 2GB SD card then (prices are dropping fast these days!). One thing: are you aware of any brand specific issue with this driver? Thanks!
[div align=\"right\"][a href=\"index.php?act=findpost&pid=140205\"][{POST_SNAPBACK}][/a][/div]

No.
I use a PNY 2GB and a Sandisk 1GB card with this driver under pdaXrom and Cacko. No problems with these cards.

I think in the original thread about the driver (see my first posting) there is a list of tested cards.
Hopefully the driver will not make a difference in supporting cards when running under Cacko or pdaXrom ;-)

Well, one minor issue:
When shutting down the Zaurus via halt or reboot, I get a segmentation fault when the K96sd script is executed.
I haven't investigated further, becasue the FS is unmounted then anyway.
No idea if this is due to the new driver.

daniel
[div align=\"right\"][a href=\"index.php?act=findpost&pid=140209\"][{POST_SNAPBACK}][/a][/div]

I've also been using this driver without noticing any problems.  (BTW, thanks!)  I don't reboot or halt very frequently, but I don't remember seeing the seg fault you report.

So far, I've been using an Ultra 2GB (not SanDisk Ultra).  With beta4, I had issues with my Patriot 4GB card, but I'm not noticing the same problems on beta3 with this driver.  I've been reinstalling and reconfiguring since moving back to beta3, so I'm waiting for things to stabilize before giving the 4GB a good workout.  Got my fingers crossed.

Being a newb to Zaurus and linux has made it tough for me to do anything with my new C3000 but I am determined to get everything working.

I have a question on X/QT and Open Office.  I have installed both with Meanie's guide.  When I launch the open office icon it goes into Debian but doesnt pull the applicaition up.  I have tried typing "soffice" in the terminal but it tells me "soffice is a directory".

So my question is how do I open Openoffice on the C3000.

Thanks.
[div align=\"right\"][a href=\"index.php?act=findpost&pid=140230\"][{POST_SNAPBACK}][/a][/div]

On my desktop, the command is 'ooffice' and I would expect it to be the same on the Zaurus.

I thought that beta4 was the first release which works with the c1000.

There are a few remote control solutions for Linux.  But I want to be able to use a keyboard with the device, without needing to bring my home computer with me.

[edit] HEY.. beta3 does work with Cxx00 .. I will try it.. but I'm not sure how happy I will be.  pdaXrom development seems strange to me.  I don't want to have to hack around to make it look and work well.  I'll try it and find out.
[div align=\"right\"][a href=\"index.php?act=findpost&pid=140236\"][{POST_SNAPBACK}][/a][/div]

I just recently "retrograded" to beta3.  I agree with everyone else that beta4 has a lot of potential, but I was spending too much time trying to get things to work and wondering if a problem was because of a new application I installed or just another issue with the OS.  I wanted to spend more time using my Zaurus.

Beta3 does seem to be more stable but I miss some of the features of beta4.  I'm looking forward to a more stable release of the 2.6 kernel.

I'm still working on a practical solution to using my USB keyboard.
