General Discussion / datebook files
« on: October 01, 2004, 04:34:43 pm »
My question was really aimed at determining how you got the data files out of the backup -- did you untar the backup on the Zaurus, or did you perhaps copy the data files from a Windows system?  If the latter, you should take a close look at how this was done because it is possible that the files could be altered by the transfer procedure.

No.  ~root/Applications is a symbolic link to /home/zaurus/Applications, so you only need to copy the files there.

I can't think of anything else off the top of my head that would be preventing it from finding the data -- I'll have to go & think about it some more.

What is the process that you used to get the old files from your backup and put them onto the SD card?  Is there a chance somehow that part of that process is modifying the data files (ex: FTP in non-binary mode, or a transfer util that is replacing LFs with CR/LFs)?

General Discussion / cf slot not working...

What does the following command return:
cardctl ident

The reason that I ask is that I found my CF modem was mis-identifying itself as a modem + memory card, and the Zaurus only saw it as a memory card.  I modified the entry so that it was recognized as a modem without any memory (which it truly is) and everything was fine after that.

As to your flash question, I recall that Sharp had a utility where you could transfer the flash image directly from a Windows box to your Z and flash -- I can't recall where the image was stored in that case, but I think it was in internal memory.  Perhaps another member reading this can give more details.

Are you sure that the data was actually copied??  The PIM apps are fast-loaded by default, which means that they are running all the time, hence the files open for write &, therefore, you can't overwrite the files.

In order to successfully overwrite the DTM data files, you must first disable fast load on all of the PIM apps and make sure the apps aren't running (use kill if ps shows they are still around).

He's no George McGovern (the first candidate I voted for and the last I felt good about).
He's decidely to the left of Mr. McGovern.

Here's a quote from political commentator Mark Taylor on the Democratic candidate political spectrum:
Quote
In fact John Kerry is not only more liberal than Howard Dean, he will be the most liberal candidate the Democrats have ever nominated. The left wing advocacy group “Americans for Democratic Action” gives John Kerry a lifetime vote rating of 93. Ted Kennedy only gets an 88! Walter Mondale’s rating was 90. George McGovern was a veritable right winger among Democrats with a lifetime ADA rating of only 75%. Of the ten people who officially sought the party’s nomination in 2004, Kerry’s liberal voting record exceeds them all. Carole Moseley-Braun rated an 88. And Dennis Kucinich scored a 90%.

Conservatives have Kerry
Surely you jest (a few smilies would help)...

Kerry has beed named the most liberal member of the US Senate (out of the 100 Senators!) four times in his career by the independent publication National Journal (see, for example: http://www.washtimes.com/op-ed/20040301-085725-5267r.htm ).

A liberal political group called The Americans for Democratic Action has given Kerry a 92 out of 100 liberal ranking.

The American Conservative Union gave Kerry a 13 out of 100 rating as a conservative.  His career ranking from the group is a 5.

Can anyone advise me if this really is the end of my lovely SL5500, or is there some sort of hope?  And if so what?
Try sending an Email to Bill Kendrick (bill at newbreedsoftware.com).  He posted to the tnn.sys.zaurus newsgroup about a month ago with the same problem -- he was looking for the location of the file that the calibration procedure creates.  I provided him with the info (and a sample of the file from my 5500).  Perhaps he came up with a way to circumvent the calibration process (telneting in??).

5x00 General discussions / memory
« on: September 13, 2004, 05:26:28 pm »
The pre-installed apps on the 5500 are located in ROM.  Only the links to the files are stored in RAM and these take an insignificant amount of memory.

Some of the PIM apps are set to "fast load", which means that they are pre-loaded in RAM, ready to run.  If you are willing to sacrifice load time to free up memory, tap & hold on the icons of the Datebook, Addressbook, and ToDo apps, then uncheck the FastLoad option.

Another alternative is to create a swap file.  If you have a SD or CF card for storing apps, you can then free up some "internal storage" to be used for swap, which will help when running multiple apps or opening large files.  Search this board or the Devnet board for info on creating a swap file.

Sounds like the filesystem on the card got corrupted.  Open a terminal (console) window and type dmesg.  Examine the messages for errors regarding the CF card.

Can you put the CF card in a card reader on your PC and read from it successfully?  How about writing to it??

The hotplug mechanism is probably what you're after.  Assuming you want the script to fire off whenever you put the Z in its cradle, see my comments in this thread:
https://www.oesf.org/forums/inde...?showtopic=4793

If you're looking to do this wirelessly instead, you'll have to tie it to that port, instead of the usb port.

Or, if you really do want this to fire off whenever the Z is started, add the commands to the appropriate script below /home/etc/rc.d.
