Gemini PDA - General Discussion / Re: IRC?
« Last post by novaldex on September 14, 2021, 07:32:22 am »
I know this is on an old post, but i'm reconfiguring our logging service from freenode to Libera and wanted to check and see if the gemini-pda channel is still in use (it's very quiet!) and/or if there are any others I should be looking at.

Thanks!

I thought I would report, as I finally got around to attempting to install rooted Android on the 2nd TWRP boot partition. It seems to work fine, with the expected drawback that the modem doesn't work so one can't call. Wifi works fine though, and I can still run Titanium backup, which was my main purpose for having a rooted Android on the phone. So now I have successfully installed Ubuntu Ports over the old rooted Android in partition 4, and have a set up as follows: 1. Android; 2. rooted Android (no cellular); 3. Kde Gemian; 4. Ubuntu Touch. I'm really enjoying exploring Ubuntu touch.

PS I am amused to think that I backed Ubuntu's Kickstarter or Indiegogo convergence phone almost a decade ago, only to have it refunded when they didn't make the millions they'd asked for. But almost a decade on, I've finally got my Ubuntu phone and with an attached Psion-keyboard as well. Happy days!

I had not stumbled on that page in their support wiki. But based on this you do not even need TWRP if you can just get to the basic recovery.

Just grab the image and follow the instructions: https://support.planetcom.co.uk/index.php/Cosmo_Android_Firmware_Manual_Installation

You'll lose all data on the device since it requires repartitioning the device at least for the duration of the installation...

Hi,
I've been in conversation with Planet support for a month or so about just this issue. In my case I've been trying to help my brother out, as he wasn't using his Cosmo at the time they did the switch over from V15 firmware to V16 and ditched the OTA provider they'd been using (which is why you can't get any OTA updates if you are still on V15). Here is the last response they sent us. I haven't yet followed these instructions as my brother's Cosmo is with him and he wants me to help hold his hand while he goes through the business of flashing the thing. But this looks as though it should work.
Good luck, and let us know how you get on. (I'll try and remember to do the same when I see my brother and give this a go. There must be quite a few people caught out by this problem, which is why I was astonished I needed so much to-ing and fro-ing with Planet to get this set of instructions from them.)
Cheers,
Ian

I quote:

Please follow the manual recovery steps here - https://support.planetcom.co.uk/index.php/TWRP_Manual_Recovery . This should update you to v23 at least, and from there OTAs should hopefully resume on your device.

If this doesn't fix the issue, we'd then definitely need you to send the device to us. Should it come to that, please summarise in simple bullet points if any extra servicing is necessary, in addition the OTAs fix.
Feel free to let us know if there's anything else we can help you with.

Kind regards,
Customer Care Team

Did PC offer to repair it if you were to send it to them?
I suggested a return to base for an out of warranty repair at one point but didn't get an answer.  To be fair I think the comment got buried in the barrage of clutter I was sending them.  I reckon I generated more case notes than the Roswell autopsies on this one.
Oh well, moving on.  Must go, I will need to get some serious brownie points before I can order my Pro1 X, this will be my fourth new phone in the last two years.

Hi!

Yes, I know there is a Sell/Wanted subforum here on OESF. Fairly little seems to happen there, so I'm posting here instead. Sorry if that's not the intended way. For logistical reasons, this is mainly directed to people in Sweden. I'm still writing this in English, as it's the lingua franca around here ;-)

Anyway... once upon a time, I backed a Planet Car Mount kit, weird logistics made me end up with two, and I no longer need them.

I briefly used one, with the air vent clamp, but I never used the suctions cups. They still have their original protective plastic attached. Letting them just age in a cupboard, feels kind of dumb, so: Would anyone in Sweden want a car mount kit, or two?

Feel free to ask me stuff below or PM me, if you prefer that.

I also had the same problem, but found that with care, and gentle coaxing the slots on the rubber will  slide back on over the hinge. It's not moved in 4 months...so far!

Sorry to hear that it didn't help.

What was PC's response?
We had quite a discussion, 10 out of 10 for effort, but ultimately fruitless.
It got to the point where I thought we weren't getting anywhere so I knocked it on the head.
The Cosmo soldiers on as a pda, sort of like a wifi only Gem with a backlit keyboard.
Back to the PinePhone for daily driver duties for now.
I still get to keep Ubuntu Touch though, which is nice.
