Wanted: C-guys Sdio Wi-fi Sd Card
« on: January 24, 2005, 07:02:57 pm »
Anyone have the C-Guys SDIO Wi-Fi SD card they could sell to me?  I know that www.dealsonics.com sells them but they can't take a money order.  Any idea who can sell them for money orders?

You may want to check to make sure it'll work with a Zaurus, I think I remember reading some posts that Zaurii don't support SDIO. Try searching the forum for SDIO posts.
***edit***
I did some searching on my own after replying to this thread and see that you been posting in threads about the driver for this card. But from reading the posts, it doesn't seem clear whether or not this card works. Reports that it works but is flakey on the 3000 and others that it works with Sharp ROM but not Cacko.

Also I did find it on http://shop.brando.com.hk/ but it is twice as expensive.

****edit****

If it does work I'd love to know about it as I'd prefer to use WiFi in my SD slot . That way I could keep my debian on my CF micro drive

Cheers,
Jerry

Thanks for the reply.  Yea, my impression was that it does work well on the Sharp ROM, but for some reason that it doesn't work well or perfectly w/the Cacko ROM.  I think, this is correct, right?  I just emailed the Brando HK website and I am currently waiting for a reply.

I had considered buying this card, but it doesn't seem to be worth it. Even on the original Sharp ROM, its functionality is incomplete - according to the c-guys website, it will not work with the Sharp ROM e-mail program (the site doesn't specify why). It's possible that it might not work with other network programs, as well, such as sniffers (kismet, wellenreiter). Since the card requires a custom driver, if you ever switch to another ROM/kernel, chances are it won't work.

Of course, if you plan to stick with the original Sharp ROM and only want to browse the web, it might be enough. Note that c-guys.net sells the card for almost half the price of Brando, but I don't know if they'll ship outside of Japan.

I wonder if anyone on this board has one of these and can speak from first hand experience?

I emailed them about compatibility and here's the response. Doesn't sound like they've much experience with the zaurus, or maybe it was just this tech-support guy.. Isn't SDIO support a kernel issue?

The way I understand is that Sharp only support the SDIO socket driver
for limited devices only.

In order for the SDIO applications (WLAN, Radio, GPS ---etc) to work on
a system, the system must support the SD slot driver (in the SDIO way).
That can be different from device to device (like Palm) and time
consuming for the device vendor.  So, they limited that effort to a
specific device.

In the Windows based PDAs, the company called BSquare developed a
unified SDIO host driver which applies all Windows based PDAs.  That is
why our card (or any SDIO cards) works for any PDAs.

That is difference.

Thank you for your quick reply. I'm curious as to why
it doesn't work in the 750 if it does in the 760? I
thought the 750 & 760 are very similar except for
additional memory in the 760. Is it a kernel issue?.

Additionally does it work with non-Sharp-based ROMs,
i.e. Cacko 1.22?

Thanks again,
Jerry

Always been wondering that too, why it doesnt work on a c700/c750 but work on the c760, maybe sharp decided to add extra soldering on the SD slot or something

Thanks for pointing out the thread, I had seen it before but had hoped that they had improved 760 & 860 support. As I'm still under the delusion that if it'd work in a 760, it'd work in a 750  It hasn't been explained why if it worked in a 760 it wouldn't in a 750 (I saw your post wondering the same). I wonder if the c-guys weren't paying attention to the 750 because it was an old version (I noticed in an email that they had targeted the 760, then before the driver was released the 860 was out and they focused on that model).

Hope springs eternal...
