Slow Performance With C760 And Cacko 1.22
« on: January 30, 2005, 06:37:13 pm »
hi, I just got my Z (c760), and I am sorta new to linux.  What I was wonderng is, well, I have cacko installed and I noticed there was quite a lot of processes that started at boottime which I am just not interested in running.  Such are qtsamba, datebook, addressbook, todolist, zimager, textedit, and like 10 instances of qeserver (what is this btw?, do I need it to ssh/sftp?)

I was wondering how I would be able to disable these things from loading at startup so I could free up some ram.  Everything seems to be running ridiculously slow.  I only have a few apps installed (nano/perl/opie-reader/timzer/qpdf/vim) and I think everything installed alright.  It just aggitates me that from the get go only 1-2 megs of ram is free and the rest is cache'd or being used and chewed up. What's the point of having everything running if what you want to run moves like molasses? Well, that's a bit harsh.  Damn I sound like one of those picky turbo nerds heh. Cacko is a GREAT rom, the work done to it should not be discredited on my part.  I forget that there's a person behind each project sometimes.  What I mean to say is more like, how can I edit cacko to make it more useful FOR ME (which granted is apart of the linux/gnu philosophy).  I need this rom to run as fast as possible. It's already overclocked I believe (cacko has overclocking with the battery applet).

Thanks, and great work on the ROM.  I can't wait to try the other two I am interested in as well (pdaX and OZ).

Chow,

James

you may activate too many fastload.  try to:
- tap on the icon, say datebook
- hold for a few sec
- uncheck "Fast Load"

hope this help.

Well, it sorta helped.  It still says I only have 3 megs free of RAM.  Is this normal for cacko?  I was hoping to have a lot more for opening larger source files and pdfs.  Anymore ways to free some memory up?

Projwkt

Suggest you create swap file which should enable you to open very large files.

Can't understand why Cacko is slow, it should be slightly faster if anything.

Eh, I don't think that's what I mean either.  Sure the swap file helps, but I think applications would load faster if some processes just weren't running. Granted, this is my first ROM (japanese sharp rom unuseable) and I really have no idea what this Z is capable of.  I used to own a 5500 a few months back, and really I haven't seen much of a speed differece with the additional ram/processer speed on the 760.

How can I make this thing FAST! I want a minimal setup, I just want vim open and I want to have sftp/ssh enabled. Everything else can take a hike!  I'll probably figure it out eventually, i am still getting to terms with the linux kernel and using the terminal.

On my Cacko-Zaurus 16 MB are used by default with 23mb cache and 21 free. so about 44 mb is free to run applications. I never run out of memory so far.

if you will use pdaxrom and bloated application like firefox you probably will run out of memory. There it might make sense to create a swap file on cf.

I don't think processes will slow the CPU, because most of them are sleeping. However they need some ram.
(i guess qeserver is for inter-prozess communication, inetd is used for ssh)

You might want to try OpenZaurus. ROM file is much smaller than Cacko, only 14MB.  Only needed applications are included in the rom. You must install most applications yourself e.g. a web-browser or the samba-server (to connect from windows).
