GPE Login Anomolies

This thread is not expecting an answer so don't feel obliged to answer it. But I don't have enough information about this to report it as a bug so here it is.

OZ 3.5.1 - GPE image. - 5600

After installation of arbitrary programs (gpe-nmf and minimo for me, although could be others). A successful login switches to a black screen with X shaped pointer, then imediately switches back to login screen.

This happens with both root and normal users logging in.

Format/Reboot/Reset does not change this behaviour. Had to reflash.
If you do manage to replicate this, and you have access to the system via a shell then please check users /home/user/.xsession-errors files and report a bug to gpe.handhelds.org.

Have you changed your personal settings? If so this is a known bug.

After having made the mistake of changing my personal settings before reading about this bug, I decided to find a way to fix the issue without performing a flash.

Here's how I restored my login without flashing:

Since I was / am still able to login to GPE as root, I used "User Manager" to create a "dummy" user account called "dummy", (you need to create a dummy account because OpenZaurus requires that you have at least one user account at all times) then deleted my user account in "User Manager", hit "OK" and then re-launched "User Manager" and re-created my user account.

Now, log root out of GPE, and log in with your re-created user account.  You may get some GPE errors the first time, but it will eventually come up. As soon as GPE does come up (and you have finished entering whatever settings it asks for) log out and log back in and everything should be in working order.

Since I was able to login to GPE as root, it leads me to believe that one of the config / preference files found within your home folder is being corrupted when you change your user info.  It therefore, should be possible to track down and edit the offending file by hand to resolve the problem. (note: despite searching for such a damaged file, I was not able to find it)

While this is not a perfect solution, because I did still have to delete my account, I should be able to move my files into a temp location before removing my account if this happens in the future, and this process tool far less time than a re-flash

Hope this helps someone else out, and maybe points someone with more Linux ability than I in the right direction to finding the corruption caused by this bug.

This anomoly still affects OZ 3.5.3 (GPE), and the previously mention fix-action seems to be the only fix currently.

What settings do you need to delete? I ran into this problem right after installing, I can't log in as user or as  root either.  I ssh'd in and made a new user, but still I have the same problem.

OK, so I uninstalled gpe, and reinstalled, it still did the same thing, so I uninstalled it.  Now I am done with it.

It's quite funny none of you decided to do the right thing: report this to the gpe mailinglist and/or file a bug in bugzilla. Instead of whining on some backwater forum asking your collective selfes why stuff doesn't get fixed, report bugs the right way so developers know what's wrong.

To repeat my point: if you find a bug, put it in the projects bug tracking system, if it isn't there already. If it is already there, try to give additional information.

That is odd, I thought the back and forth exchange of help, in a centralized place,  to help keep the riff-raff off the developers back, was exactly what forums are for.  Idiot.  If your not going to help, just don't say anything at all.

I did not say anything about exchanging help, I made a point about whining "I am done with it" and reporting bugs to the relevant bugs trackers. If you think that's idiotic or unhelpfull, I wonder why I use that bugtracker to see what bugs I can fix, since users obviously don't care about bugs getting fixed.

To make it even worse, a search through the forum would have revealed the solution.

I'm not against exchanging help in forums, I just hate it when people whine about bugs and don't submit them. Last time I checked bugs didn't fix themselves.

If you have some more name calling and insulting to do, I refer you to the forum guidelines.

First off, you started with the insulting, Second off a search through the forums uncovered no workable solution for my problem, similar, but not the same, trust me.  Lastly, what you call whining, is in fact just a message to let anyone, who might actually want to help me, know that I have moved on, I no longer care, it doesn't work for me, I will try it again after a few updates, maybe.  To insult me by saying that I am whining, when I am only trying to use this forum the way it is intended to be used, makes you the bad person, not me.

I wonder if you would be kind enough to provide a link to the very post you are referring to... or even the issue number in bugzilla eventually ?

I've had this problem when I changed my Xinit files and inserted things that didn't work.  Perhaps the apps you're installing have edited these files and they're now broken?

Ah, yes, that's what I had mangled when I had this problem.  The keylaunchrc file was borked, so keylaunch wouldn't start and it crashed the X session or something.
