Hello,

is there an overview of all options a Zaurus user has in emergency situations, i.e. boot with D and M, boot with D and B, boot with OK held down (are there more??). and what these options do (with service menu translations)?

I'd like to be prepared if I ever come into an emergency situation. <g>

For example, what exactly does an fsck do in the diagnose menu (OK+on)?

What is the difference between the Flash/Erase optoin in the diag menu and the NAND restore option in the service menu?

What does the Flash/Update option in the diagnose menu do?

Is there any way to do a HDD backup (which needs > 4GB storage space) to another medium than CF or SD (USB?)?

Or are there adapters to connect an external IDE hard drive to a CF port, which would allow easy COMPLETE backups without the need to buy an expensive huge CF card?

What is the difference between the option 2 / 2 in the flash menu (overwrite /hdd3) and the Zeroing of the hard drice in the service menu? Does the service menu really erase the ENTIRE hard drive, even the partition table, and the flash menu thing only hdd3, leaving partitions intact and recreating file system?

A: yes. You can connect the Zaurus to an external HDD ( via USB) or to the network ( wireless or USB - ethernet adapter) to do this

As far as your other questions go: I would be really interested in some answers as well, especially as they relate to HDD3. I had to restore the whole system to default (Japanese and such) to get my HDD3 contents back. Than, a little bit later (when I tried unsuccessfully to convert HDD3 to ext3) I have found that even if you do a restore, the restore will not revert HDD3 to VFAT. So I had to experiement with fdisk, mkfs and such to get it back to original state (it worked).

Yes, in general I know that, but what options are used for fsck, what drives are checked, are they checked in a batch or all seperately by different menu options...?

Well, I only see Meanie mention the backup from the Settings tab in QTopia. Not the one from the service menu. Maybe I'm too tired today... sorry. Could you please quote the text you are speaking of?

Another question: Anyone ever translated the Japanese flash menu entirely to English? I only see single options translated, but not the entire menu.
I just wanted to fsck everything using the instructions on meanie's site (flash menu, option 2, then in the sub.-menu also option 2), but it only checked hda1 and hda2. Would be interesting to know what the other options mean and if they can do more. But I don't dare to try. Not before I have my second Zaurus unit for experiments. <g>

Sorry if my post was misleading. I wanted to say the Meanie talks about USB drives and USB Ethernet. You are right, he does not talk about the service menu, since the little information that is known is well summarized in the Trisoft document. ( which describes I think all flash menu options and also several service menu options ).
