i dont want to muddy the waters when it comes to talking about the legality of an open source sd/sdio stack but if montavista were to embed this in thier software then you buy a device that uses it, you have effectivly paid the licsencing fee and are therefore entitled to use a sd/sdio stack for that device

now please dont quote me on that but it means you would then be able to use an open source one as you have paid the required fees, and becuase it would be a kernel module montavista would have to liscense it under the gpl AND because itsunder the gpl they have to give you a copy of the source when you buy the device (or accsess to it)

esentially it boils down to 2 things, in your next zaurus you might get full sd/sdio support and can leagaly use it for that device, or you can rip it out of some other device and be doing somthing akin to piracy

ethier way dont expect to see any progress, aparently there is a working sd driver out there for 2.6 just not released due to its touch legal nature

can any one clear up or confirm anything i have said (it reads like arabaling man has written this to me)

they don`t need to buy SD/SDIO license if they reverse enginerred that but it is not the most leagal thing just like linux and macosx use Samba to access windows shares over the network.

one of the funny things to note is that the mmc standard is in its 4th incarnation and is faster than SD, however both hardware and mmc that operate at this speeds arent yet avalible also nokia prefers mmc to SD so they have been holding the mmc standard up a bit

CF is also now version 3.0 and supports transfers up to 66MB/s with DMA which is nice however i am unsure if this is only in ide emulation mode which means you need a real ide chip not just a CF slot like our pda's have

When I had Familiar Linux on an old iPaq, it supported MMC (but not SD) cards with an open source driver.  This was years ago.  Is there a similar thing for the Zaurus kernel?

the zaurus works with MMC and with SD(in mmc compatible mode) but doesn`t support SDIO(the thingy that let you add bluetooth\WiFi card to the SD)

There is no such thing as "the Zaurus kernel". The hardware differs and so does the kernel. We have a working open source SD driver in our 2.6 kernels on all models but the collie and poodle. SDIO is a totally different thing which needs much more information to be opened by the card vendors - and I doubt that this will happen any time soon.
