Wellenreiter On Z-5600
« on: December 23, 2005, 05:04:34 pm »
Perhaps someone has the last bit of info I need to get Wellenreiter working on my Z 5600. I've followed numerous instructions on how to get Wellenreiter working on the Zaurus. The instructions worked fine on the Zaurus 6000L I own. However, on my Z 5600 -- when I go to configure wellenreiter (which is required before doing a scan), I cannot get anything but a blank popup window when I go to select the network device -- I'm expecting either wlan0 or eth0 (on the 6000L wlan0). The network I am starting is configured as:

IP: 1.1.1.1
Gateway: 1.1.1.0
Subnet mask: 255.255.255.0
Network is ad-hoc.

Wellenreiter has root permissions.

ROM is Sharp 1.32, and I am running Qtopia 1.5.4

The wireless card is known to work well for getting on the net with this Zaurus 5600. One clue I think is that the wireless card activity light is solid green when I start -- I am expecting it to be blinking like it does on my 6000L. I also noticed that instead of wlan0, the active network device is eth0. But this is true also when I am using the network card configured by my wireless router via DHCP -- apparently some changes happened in the Qtopia ROM between the 5600 and the 6000L.

So, do I need an upgrade of the Sharp ROM to make this work? Or is there some magic I need to apply to get what works as advertised on the 6000L working on my 5600? Or is an alternate ROM/environment necessary (I did get wellenreiter working on an older Zaurus 5500 which I had flashed with OpenZaurus/Opie, but I want to stick with the Sharp ROM and Qtopia at this point in time).

Regards, and thanks in advance.

Slogan621,

I haven't had much look with Wellenreiter. You _may_ want to consider Kismet. There is a how-to for the SL-6000 (which should be close to what you need on the 5600) at:
[a href=\"https://www.oesf.org/index.php?title=How_to_run_Kismet_on_the_SL-6000L]https://www.oesf.org/index.php?title=How_to...on_the_SL-6000L[/url]

I just grabbed the latest kismet (for Arm) from www.kismetwireless.net, and after uncompressing the binary (with uclx -d) it works like a charm.

I hope this helps,

Craig...

Hey Craig,

Thanks. But Wellenreiter is what I really want to get running.

It's interesting to note that I was able to get Wellenreiter working on the 6000, but not on the 5600... I wonder if you would run into failures trying to get kismet running on the same 5600 setup?

I suspect this is going to be an issue with the kernel or ROM version, and I am dying to know if anyone has a clue regarding how to work around it.

Just an update. I got a new Z C3100 today, and Wellenreiter installed painlessly there. More evidence that the ROM/kernel defaults for the 5600 don't seem to be sufficient.
