I Need A User Manual
« on: December 04, 2006, 08:04:33 pm »
If I remember correctly, there's a bug with the Input Setup tool in beta3, so I was trying to decipher some of the code in order to get the Calendar, Address, & Home buttons mapped to some apps.  When I got to the /mnt/smb/etc/xdg/openbox/rc.xml file, I noticed that there are keys defined for switching desktops!

I had no idea that pdaXrom supported multiple desktops!  And I had never hit the Ctrl-Alt-Left/Right keys to accidentally discover this.  Am I the only one who didn't know about this?

Now I'm wondering how many other cool features I'm completely unaware of.
Device: SL-C3200 running pdaXii13v2 build 5.5.0
Networking: Symbol Spectrum24 WLAN card; Kingston CIO10T CF NIC
Storage: 4GB Transcend 150x SD; 16GB Transcend 133x CF; 4GB Seagate CF HDD; 4GB Patriot SD
HID: Logitech V450 Laser Mouse; generic silicone USB keyboard; 2 generic optical mice; stock plastic stylus
GPS: generic "UT-41" USB GPS Receiver
Case: neoprene case from my old Palm foldable keyboard

I did know about the desktops, but never thought much of it. I would also like to know about other little-known features. More functionality is always welcome!
SL-C750- pdaXrom beta 1 (mostly unused)
Current distro: Gentoo

The OESF wiki is a good place to start. Perhaps you would be interested in working together with people like myself to create some training/manual material.

I'm going to have to think about this...  The last time I volunteered for a project like this, it became quite a job.  And that was for a single application.  There would also need to be some sort of strategy, since there are now so many different versions of pdaXrom.

I believe this is a great idea if it can be done in a carefully organized and structured manner.  If it's not thought out properly, it will only be as useful as searching in the forum.

I made a script to build the base pdaXii13 image which was originally ripped from the C3100/C1000 initrd.bin file and hence the enhancements I made to the base pdaXii13 could also be made to the stock C3100/C1000 pdaXrom beta3 version.
SL-C3000 - pdaXii13 build5.4.9 (based on pdaXrom beta3) / SL-C3100 - Sharp ROM 1.02 JP (heavily customised)
Netgear MA701 CF, SanDisk ConnectPlus CF, Socket Bluetooth CF, 4GB Kingston CF,  4GB pqi SD, 4GB ChoiceOnly SD, 2GB SanDisk SD USB Plus, 1GB SanDisk USB Plus, 1GB Transcend SD, 2GB SanDisk MicroSD with SD adaptor, Piel Frama Leather Case, GoldX 5-in-1 USB cable, USB hub, USB mouse, USB keyboard, USB ethernet, USB HDD, many other USB accessories...

much information can be gleaned from the homepage of the WM you are using. Openbox for example: http://icculus.org/openbox/docs.php?page=d...ls.html#actions

or Rox: http://rox.sourceforge.net/Manual/Manual/M...617f3#id2507632

but other window managers like IceWM and FluxBox will have their own manuals and different features.

edit: rox isn't a WM, but it still applies....

What do you feel would be the best way to structure the information?  I believe one of two options would work best:
By release:
- Common
- Beta 1
- Beta 3
- rc121
- etc...

Or by function / application:
- Window Manager
- Networking
- Keymapping
- Installing .ipk's
- etc...

I just think that if there's going to be some time and effort invested in this, it needs to be easy to find what you're looking for.  That's one of my complaints about most of the sources I've used.  I can't emphasize enough how much I appreciate sites such as Meanie's, loji's, the Wiki, this forum, and all the others I'm neglecting to include... it's just that you usually still need to do some digging to find what you're looking for.  I think it would be great if we could take a thoughtful structured approach to this and make it that much easier to find the information.  Another benefit is that it would probably be easier to update and to check the information for completeness.

Thoughts?
