Most Valuable Accessories?
« on: February 14, 2004, 07:13:06 pm »
When order my Z from, I also ordered these accessories at the same time.  They were the only ones TigerDirect sold which looked useful.

Ambicom - WL 1100C-CFC1 WIFI $60

Lexar 32MB 4x CFC $15  (Just for transferring ROMs)

I mention the prices because I am not looking to spend a lot of money.  (That\'s why I got the SL-5500 in the first place, and not the SL-C7600.)

What are your most useful and price-worthy Z accessories?

What am I going to be wanting a couple weeks or a month down the road?

I have an SL-5500, so that is the most interesting to me, but I also like to keep up on those better Zaurus models, because I think they are just plain cool!

I\'ve been reading a bit, and I see people seem to like those G2 screen protectors.  I guess I should get a couple of those so I don\'t scratch the screen up.

The most valuable accessories I can think of (as far as bang for the buck) are free.  Check out some of the alternate rom images.  If you are a casual user, then check out the TKC rom, it is the most compatible with Sharp\'s 3.1 rom image, and some things seem to just work better (wireless, for example).  If your more adventurous, you can try out some of the various home-on-sd tricks, so that you don\'t loose everything if the battery runs down or if you hard-reset.  Only drawback to using /home on your SD card is it ties up the sd slot, so you would want to get a much bigger SD card.
If your a bit more adventerous, you can try out OpenZaurus, as it has a few more features (screen rotation) and is in active development.

As for hardware, the following would be a good wish list:
1) Good case.  Especially the Piel Frama or Covertech cases, as it allows you to use the Zaurus while it is in the case (helps to keep it protected) ($50 - $80)
2) External foldable keyboard -- Targus universal wireless or Pocketop keyboard -- Makes it much easier to take notes (around $85, unless you can find a good deal on one)
3) A spare Zaurus.  If the screen cracks on it, it will be more expensive to have it fixed (by Sharp) than to replace the unit.  The $180 deals that you get at Tiger Direct tend to come and go, as they get new shipments in.  Not guaranteed to be around forever.
4) 256Meg Lexar SD card, $80.  Esp. if you are running /home or root on the SD card.

Well... not to disparage the last post but most of the items he listed I think are outragious!  $50 - $80 for a case? an extra unit just for general princapals? I think I saw you mention that you did not want to spend a lot of money!  I think it is worth the $20 to have a Pocket modem by Targus for those occations when you are not in a hot spot or your account is as empty as your pockets!  The screen protector you mentioned is one of the best ones, I use a belkin.com screen protector that is made for a ppc and I cut it off just a little and it fits like a champ 12 for $19 they last about 4 or 5 months each with average use. I have to agree that an SD Card is a nice thing to have and the little CF you got is fine for moving stuff to and fro but for a real mass storage device a bigger one is needed... I have a 128mb that I picked up for $30 on e-bay and a 64mb one that I got free after rebate on some deal when I got my camera from hp... I have a bunch of stuff on the 128 including some music and most of my files and keep my basic ospack and required apps on the 64.... I use the built in keyboard and may look at another one if and when the price gets down

Be Well

Where  is the targus modem for  $20?

After reading a few reports from G2 users who ended up with a dead touchscreen, I went with the brando protectors.

It has been on sale for $20 after rebate at every chain in the country at one time or another... I got mine at office depot for $39.99 and a $20 rebate... so $19.99 or $20 as stated. Check out those ads and you will find one too.
