Pdaxrom Beta 4 And Spectrum Wifi Card
« on: May 31, 2006, 12:39:27 pm »
So, since the release I have been fiddling with beta 4 of pdaxrom as I am a proud user for quite a while.  However, in this incarnation I can't seem to get my wifi card to work.  It is a symbol spectrum24 card, the one with the blue sticker, not the orange.  My poor 3200 has been under-used because of this foible.  Any ideas?  I installed the firmware, but no beans.  I can't seem to find the spectrum_cs in the spot that it was in past versions.

Any ideas?

Hey,

I had the same problem getting my spectrum24 card going. Here's what I was told to do:

What messages are you getting if you run
Code: [Select]
# dmesg after you insert your card? Post the last few lines after it detects the card. That's how I figured out that the firmware wasn't getting loaded properly.

When I used the firmware that I got from .... I believe you... it gets loaded... but the LED just flashs... and I can't get it to detect my AP...  I will copy and paste the dmesg when I get home... the output from looks fine... no errors....

So, if the firmware is loading then it is a network config issue. In beta4 a lot of the control applets aren't working. So I'd try using iwconfig from the command line to configure your card. I've been using wifi-radar a python-based applet to connnect to APs. You can find it in my meager feed on mail.pdaxrom.org/contrib.

Good luck

Right guys the .py configuration apps for the Beta4 and Kernel 2.6 are to be rewritten.
I did a fast script and now my card works perfectly, so it' s only a configuration problem.
This is the script i did to fix this issue for now.
Below i wrote all the explanations.
BYEZ!

#!/bin/sh

# Wireless lan settings script

echo -n "Setting Wireless ...."
iwconfig wlan0 \
essid Interlan \
channel 1 \
sens 1 \
mode managed \
ap any  \
nick Zaurus \
rate auto \
key 0923-7345-3423-DC56-FE45-0FFD-EA \
power 1
echo "done"

sleep 1

echo -n "Setting Wlan IP ...."
ifconfig wlan0 10.0.2.3 netmask 255.255.255.0
echo "done"

sleep 1

echo -n "Adding Gateway ...."
route add default gw 10.0.2.1 dev wlan0
echo "done"

sleep 1

echo -n "Adding DNS servers ...."
echo "search tiscali.it" > /etc/resolv.conf
echo "nameserver 213.205.32.70" >> /etc/resolv.conf
echo "nameserver 213.205.36.70" >> /etc/resolv.conf
echo "done"

essid:This is the ESSID setting that has to be the same of your AP

channel: Channel setting, 10 possibilities shown like 2,4 Ghz Frequencies on your iwconfig command.
Like the ESSID it has to be the same of your AP.

sens: This is the sensitivity, below power signals will be immediately discarded. It has 1 to 3 values. i.e. 1/3 of the signal power in DB shown on your iwconfig command

mode: Right, this is the best important setting as it sets the behaviour of your card.
It has 5 values Ad-Hoc,Managed,Master,Repeater and Monitor; but the 2  you will have to look at are only Ad-Hoc and Managed normally. They corrispond respectively to the one to one Wifi Lan and one to AP Wifi Lan settings, depending on your lan.

ap: Means, in Managed mode, what Access Point are you seaching for. Any means it' s completely automatic and what AP fit the best signal and complete setting like Encryption KEY, Channel etc. it' s chosen.
Or you can put the MAC Address if you have more than 1 fitting the settings.
When this MAC cannot be reached, it will comeback to the Auto Mode.

nick: It's the name which will be your identifier in the ESSID network, you can choose wha t you want. Not all the network choose it

rate: It' s the rate in MB, you can choose what you want, but put auto because, after, the Card will choose it by itself to fi the best with the Network.

key: The most important setting if you choose the WPA Encryption mode.
2 Important notes:
1) Verify it' s completely the same of your AP, or you will never get access, so verify it with the best attention; if you can, copy and past it from the AP.
2) The Key must be inserted in the mode of the example.
Do not only copy it like AF45892304 etc. without the minus separations and 4 by 4, because it will be auto managed and 0 will be added corrupting it!!!!
Auto managed means that the iwconfig doesn' t have the WPA bit length setting like the AP. I.e. 64, 128 or 256 nor the HEX or ASCII one.
It will choose the mode depending on your key.
If you want to choose the ASCII mode, add the s: string before the key.

power: It's the power management of the Card Chip, 1 it' s on and 0 off.
Set it to on or your card will never go off and will consume the battery of your Zauri even if it' s in suspend mode.

The other settings of the script are self explanatory, so change them to fit your network.
Hope it helps, byez!
