I'm looking for a non-microsoft solution. Here's the configuration I'm planning:
--- Pepper pad 3 (2.2 lbs, AMD processor, lots of connectivity, fedora core 4, touch screen, keyboard)
--- zaurus (5500, have it already)
--- Nokia 6103 phone (EDGE, FM radio, WAP browser & calendar/PIM synchronization)
--- iPOD nano ($150, contacts/PIM, music).
Everything but the iPOD can link with bluetooth and the the iPOD & zaurus can use USB to synch. The idea of music on a cell phone is a passing fad. The new hotness will be the bluetooth iPod nano with multi-pairing bluetooth headset. The multi-pairing headset is out, but, the iPod doesn't have built-in bluetooth. The Nokia 770 is nice but too small for a laptop replacement. I just can't see getting things done on a teeny-tiny-tablet (T3).
As for cost, the phone is free with cell contract; plus pepper pad 3 ($700 or less), plus iPOD ($150). The minimum is $850, which is the price of a notebook but with much more specialized hardware.
Originally, I was including getting a new zaurus (C3x00). I was just examining the list and realized that the original mission of the zaurus was to provide a portable computer that you can carry everywhere. But I never did carry it everywhere. I carried my Z in a bag. The iPOD and cell phone will go everywhere with me and the pepper pad will fit in the same bag I've been carrying the zaurus in. I really like the PDA-sized devices, but, I guess they may really be dead because I can carry my info on the phone & iPod. I may get a new Z anyway.
I am not sure how successful it will be given that the 1st gen UMPC devices are only about $300 more and the Nokia 770 and zaurus's which are pocketable are about $150-$300 less.
For a price point of $500, I might try it. For $699, I would get a laptop, stretch for a UMPC, or stay content with the Z until something better comes out.

agreed. I am wondering when the new Nokia 770 will be out which in theory has a thumboard or something - not seen any pics left.
the flybook would be a great if slightly oversized handheld if only it wasn't so expensive! The Lifebook P7120 (or Loox T70R or T70S) is really fabulous with its hi-res display but is too big to be a handheld. The Sharp Muramasa CV50 is smaller than the flybook but even more expensive yet lacks the communication adaptors.
hmm, if only I could afford all of them to try them out and see which I liked the most!
