Help! I removed the original xfree and installed the latest as per the 3100 feed. Now xfce4-panel dies with a segfault.

Any idea how I can fix this? Or where can I get older version of xfree?

Thanks Chero, but would anything nasty happen if I installed a "7x0-860" package on a C3100? In general, would the only difference be that they would be compiled with different optimisation flags? I don't want to make an even bigger mess  It's bad enough already now that I have to go back to using Matchbox!

Um, how about recompiling the XFCE packages for the new Xfree?

BTW it's not only xfce4-panel which segfaults. It appears that xfdesktop does so as well (I run it from xterm to change my background image, the image changes then segfaults), thus right-clicking on the desktop has no response.

I haven't installed the new xfree yet, so I don't know what's going on, but :
- did you install it while running xfce ? I can imagine this being a bad idea.

What I would try first :
1. leave xfce (no problem cause you can't even enter)
2. remove .config and .cache from the home-dir
3. try to run xfce again
4. if this doesn't work, reinstall xfce
5. try to run xfce again
6. if it still doesn't work : it probably won't work with the new xfree, so recompiling is an option or it's time to try and play with icewm, fvwm, ... .

Good luck and keep us up to date.
Chero.

Probably yes as the owner of spy.org has a 760, unless he upgraded recently.

Not quite, the hardware is different most packages of the 7x0-860 feed run on the 1000/3100 but not the kernel, kernel modules and ...the xserver which uses a different driver for graphic acceleration.

Perhap as a quick fix you can try to use the xserver from rc11?

No. I was sane enough to quit X and remove old xfree and reinstall new xfree from the command line

Not strictly true. xfce starts and loads my session. It seems to function fine, but without the xfce4-panel it makes using it a pita

OK I'm going to try that later on.

or it's time to try and play with icewm, fvwm, ... .

The thing I don't like about icewm (and matchbox) is that windows can't be moved beyond the boundary of the screen size. Firefox is a major culprit. many of its dialogs are huge and go way off the screen making it difficult to use on those WMs.

As for fvwm, some guy was doing some great work on it a few months back. But because it doesn't seem to have been updated for rc12 I decided to give it a miss for now.

Will do.

With icewm (and with openbox iirc) I can move the window outside the screen pressing alt and moving the window with the stylus.

Thanks for that. When I had tried it previously it didn't work because the "catch" is that the window must not be maximised. So to move window outside boundaries of the screen you must "unmaximise" them first.

For the good news, I've got my Xfce desktop back

I removed my xfce settings and xfce starts up fine -- even the panel. I then removed practically everything from the default panel -- leaving just the graphical pager and the clock -- then started adding things (that I want) back in. All went well until I tried to add the "Xfce4 Panel Menu", everytime I try to add this item, the panel dies with a segfault on clicking the close button.

Anyway I reconfigured the rest of my settings and all is well -- so far. I've restarted Xfce a few times and the panel is still holding up

HOSTAP drivers, utils, daemon and wpa-supplicant
please try test hostap drivers from current rc12 feed (use need feed for your Z)

SUN MIDP2 (  http://java.sun.com/products/midp/ )

download: http://mail.pdaxrom.org/rc12/test/MIDP2.0-arm.tar.gz
ungzip it
for run enter:
./midp

for install applets use:

./midp -install http://super.games.com/game.jar

warning, before running midp you will need update X11 for support 2 bytes chars.
remove installed xserver and install again from feed (use rigth feed for your Z):
[div align=\"right\"][a href=\"index.php?act=findpost&pid=104571\"][{POST_SNAPBACK}][/a][/div]

I've tried it on my SL-6000 and it works without touching anything, with the sole exception of the letters. Perhaps this is due to the X's (I haven't changed). Anyway: Thanks and WELL DONE!!

The panel menu needs files in .config.

Try to bring back your panel after it disappears (from an aterm). It's a known issue that the panel disappears after adding it the first time. If that doesn't work, try reinstalling the panel-menu.

The hostap driver works
however for my Ambicom WL1100C card, it shows that it is a Z-Com XI300 card when I press the pcmica icon at the bottom panel, i need to manually put a # in front of the Z-Com card and insert the Ambicom information in the hostap_cs.conf

OK thanks, but I think I'll give it a miss. I didn't need it before (ie before I upgrade the X server) so I don't think I'll need it this time. What does it do anyway? Does it duplicate the "Settings > Panel Settings"? If so, I definitely don't need it, I want to keep my system mean and lean
