Looking For Short Usb Mini-a To Mini-b Cable
« on: February 24, 2007, 01:14:00 pm »
I'm building a sort of mini "docking station" for my C1000, which will supply power and have a USB hub.  I need a short USB OTG mini-A to mini-B cable for connecting the Z to the hub.  This type of cable does not appear to be very popular and the shortest I've found thus far is 1.5m.  15cm (6-in) would be more than enough for my purposes and I don't want loops of extra cable hanging off.

Does anyone know of a source for something like this?  I could custom order, but the min order for one site I found is $100 and I doubt I'll find another vendor that's much cheaper.

If this cable does not exist, would it be practical to build one?  I'm not familiar with USB cables or if there are tight specs on the type of conductors, shielding, etc.

Thanks!
Device: SL-C3200 running pdaXii13v2 build 5.5.0

GPS: generic "UT-41" USB GPS Receiver
Case: neoprene case from my old Palm foldable keyboard

I applaud your efforts.
Please take lots of notes and pictures as I would like to build one, some day too.

Try iriver. I believe I saw it in one of their leaflets when I bought the regular usb-host cable from them.

The GoldX cable collection has a 6 inch version of that cable (but only available in the US)

or you can slice and dice your own. the mini b can be easily converted to function like a mini a by connecting the fifth unconnected pin... there are detailed guides with images that show you how to do it step by step... search the hardware mod sub forum...

USB cables aren't too fussy; you can go pretty far off spec and still end up with something that works.

My silly USB host conversion stuff (https://www.oesf.org/forums/index.php?showtopic=22308) would work, but it's more about making mini-A connectors when you can't already find them cheaply. Since you can already find a mini-A to mini-B cable I'd just cut the excess wire from the middle of it and reconnect the two ends together to form a shorter cable.
