Beta Testing R198
« on: April 29, 2007, 07:33:45 am »
I am interested in trying out r198 and I have read the posts but have a few questions before I take the plunge.  I am comfortable with tweatking the system but am not quite as proficient as the venerable masters of the zaurus!
I also need my system to at least connect to the net and be able to run, kopi firefox, sylpheed and debian (for htdig and apache).

1) Will chroot debian run with the 2.6 kernel, I am dying to get rekall and straw going?

2) Does USB connection for data transfer still work?

3) Is firefox and java plugin working, I don't see them in the r198 feed?

4) Is wifi and bluetooth PPP working (I have socket CF Wifi and bluetooth cards)?

5) Will kismet work with the socket driver (I currently have a patched driver that supports monitor mode?

6) I have read that flashing back to beta3 can be problematic, will I be able to recover my previous install?

7) Is the configuration of the keymap to support the CE-RH2 the same as in beta3?

I know they're a bit of a jumble of questions, but I guess they may be of interest to those thinking of flashing.

My system is a c3100 and the microdrive is divided into three partitions:
/dev/hda1 - swap, /dev/hda2 ext3- programs and debroot, /dev/hda3 FAT - data

1. No idea.

2. I believe not, but I haven't tried

3. Firefox should be in the feed and function, Java no, AFAIK

4. Wifi works with my Ambicom card, but you have to manually connect (scripts make this quite easy). I don't use bluetooth, so I haven't tested it.

5. Kismet works with the hostap driver with my Ambicom card right after putting the correct info in kismet.conf (or whatever the file is), I can't comment on others.

6. I believe you have to restore back to SHARP ROM, then you can restore your Beta 3 image, but the time I tried to do that I had SD formatting errors, so YMMV.

7. No idea

Hope this helps.

Thanks Capn_Fish,

good to know what we don't know!
I may have to wait a little as my zaurus is in daily use and would need to be usable after a weekend of fixes, I think I'd only be able to sort out a couple of these in that time!
I don't think Angstrom or Uboot Debian sound mature enough either... if only I had a spare zaurus to devote full time to bug hunting!

Most of old software will work (except of kernel modules from kernel 2.4-based versions) from old feeds (I'm still using some software from beta1 feeds...)
