Using Zaurus to console
« on: March 10, 2004, 12:06:30 pm »
As  Linux anorak and full time Sun engineer, I spend my time at work working on servers in a drafty datacentre and have decided to purchase a zaurus pda to help me in my job. Can anyone tell me if I am able to use this PDA 5500/5600 to console onto a server using terminal software that I know is supplied with the zaurus 5500/5600 ,attaching thro\' a serial port from  a zaurus pda to the server in queston (documentation not found if this can be done or not) . Any response appreciated.

I connect to my network and do all kinds of stuff (including ssh and vnc.  I don\'t use telnet or recall if the client is installed on the Z by default, but there is no reason it shouldn\'t work) with this 10/100:

It will be easier than using a serial cable, but if you need to console in through the serial for troubleshooting network issues, initial configuration, or whatever... this guy has nice cables:

With a serial cable you could use minicom or kermit, depends what\'s waiting on the other end.

If the other end is waiting for ppp comms then you can do that too and get an ip address, etc.

You may find this handy, too,  http://www.sc-systems.com/support/jspZaurus.htm - I want to do the same for Cisco swiitches, I bought myself the zThin cable and looks pretty OK, just seems to still be spewing spurious characters at the moment, must be some kind of daemon running still. If you find out what it is, let me know, please! I\'m still concentrating on trying to get any form of intellisync going .....

The screen resolution on the SL-5500 does not allow a full 80 column display, if that is what you need.  Also, editing text files with vi does not work well when the text wraps around the screen with the Sharp v3.10 ROM in my experience.  An SL-C760, which I currently use, is more like a regular computer.
