help me move away from the qtopia roms
« on: April 28, 2004, 11:05:36 am »
i think that the pdaxrom is great.  unfortunatley, i haven\'t been able to get myself away from the cacko 1.21a qtopia rom.  that rom makes the z work perfectly with the address book sorting properly and the flexible network setup and, of course, the synching.

the barriers i have to using pdaxrom are as follows:

network configuration flexibility.  the qt network app works with wep and stores multiple location configs.  with pdaxrom i have to manually configure the wep settings from the command line in addition to selecting the location from the application.

calendar synch.  i\'m using outlook for calendering on my pc, so being able to synch with that would be nice, however, i\'m not married to it, and would be just as happy to use something else if it allowed me to synch with the z.  the webcalendar project says that they will have ical synching soon, so this problem may resolve itself, but untill then, are there any other options?

address book synch.  again, i\'m using outlook for addresses, but i would love to get away from it.  i use thunderbird for e-mail, but haven\'t moved my contacts over.  i\'ve thought of using ldap for my contacts, but i haven\'t found anything in my reasearch that indicates if that would work well.  it\'s unclear if you can have a local cache of the address book, and if you can upload new contacts to the ldap database from the address book application.  are there any other ways to have address book synching between the z and a pc?

on the pc end, i would love to have everything live on a server (i have a 2k3 box at home for just this purpose) and have my pc and my z and my laptop synch up with it.  it\'s going to be a nightmare to try and keep the three of them up to date with eachother without using some kind of synching, and a server based solution seems most sensible to me.

i\'ve just started using subversion on the server, and perhaps if i\'m using the same calendar and address book on all the machines, i could just make them store their data in a repository, then just use subversion to synchronize between them.  this seems like a rather inelegant solution when compared to a calendar server type application.  i\'m very excited about using subversion to manage my files across the machines, and to keep a history of changes.

i imagine i\'m not the only one out there with this kind of dilema, so hopefully some of you have solutions already and hopefully your solutions will help more than just me.

i\'m sure this has been asked before, but is it possible to just have the qt apps i want, but be running pdaxrom? (and not in a dual boot, that doesn\'t seem too pratical to me.)

thanks for the advice

Exactly what I\'d like to see.  The minute this happens I\'m on pdaXrom for good.
