Game emulation
« on: June 03, 2018, 05:45:11 am »
For those who like the older games, the gemini can emulate many systems. Whilst some are a bit slow (dolphin) and some run very old games (mame). there are several which can play games at full speed and even use a joystick. I have two installed which can play modernish games well.

mupen64plus - n64 emulator
ppsspp - psp emulator

Both are completely functional and operate at 100% original speed. The best news is that you can attach a joystick to the usb port and play full screen. Add HDMI and you have yourself a console. Both systems are no longer sold, but you can get roms for them. I only download roms for games I have, but each to their own. I'm obviously not going to post a link to the roms, but they are easily found. The emulators are in the store. The PSP is particularly impressive as the graphics are still quite good even today. The n64 plays well, but does look a bit dated.

Surprisingly, the battery lasts a long time while playing these games as they are still less intensive than modern games.

Enjoy.

For those who like the older games...

ScummVM runs very well on the Gemini and can run a multitude of games. For some you really need a  mouse, but that doesn't present a problem with the Gemini.

(Vader, this was how I noticed my hub was thirsty, starting from a bit under 50% after a few hours of playing DOTT with a mouse on the hub, the Gemini shut down)

If you know where to find the ROMs the Gemini is also great for playing GBA (Gameboy Advance) games, it's a great upgrade from the 90's style display of the original device, and playing with hardware buttons is much better then simulating buttons on a phone. Look for 'MyBoy', this allows for full customized mapping of the keys to any key on the keyboard.

There's only one small problem with long keypresses during games: the alternate-symbol list for the key pops up on the bottom of the screen for some keys. It would be nice if this could be configured in some way.

How well does the Gemini handle recognising an XBox pad hooked up to the USB hub?

I use a logitech corded joystick (can't remember the model number) which emulates an xbox controller. It works perfectly straight out of the box. As it is recognised as an xbox controller, it is already configured so most games already have mapping. I haven't had to map any games/emulators so far. Works really well.
