Great ROM but beware of "normal" users

Wow, this X11 ROM is really great, I allready love it. I installed it, and tcl/tk, and my apps work out of the box - a few text color fixes might be necessary.

So far, so good. I\'m a Linux fan (and have some experience). But installing Gnumeric (which I need) was an ordeal: a dozen other packages are needed but you get no information about which, so the only way I found was to start Gnumeric from the terminal and install whatever the error message complained not finding, regularly swapping the CF card from the Z to the PowerBook (that has a card reader) and downloading the pakages from the feed....

If one expects \"normal\" users, not crazy linuxers like me, to install this, someone must fix this....

This said, Gnumeric on X11 on the Z is terrific ))

This is deffinatly an issue, and there\'s realy no easy solution.  MAybe once things pick up some speed for x11 on Cxx0 models, someone will set up a site with packages that have already been compiled.  Of course, then someone (probably at cacko) will need to decide on a package format to use.

i concurr abuot the above \"package madness\" post .. my solution was to move into my feed directory and type \"ipkg install *ipk\" ... this would of course isntall EVERY ipk in the directory (kinda overkill i know) ... i would then start up qpackager and remove the packages i didnt want ...

thats one way to do it.

What I\'ve done to make life easier when installing apps, especially those with many dependancies, is use an online feed (ZUG x11 feed or cacko feed) which I posted a note about in this thread.

That way, when you install an app, gnumeric, it will install all the dependencies for you!  Yippee!

Sash i working on updating the packager and creator of the ipks and packages file - when this is done all dependies are listed - but offroadgeeks solutions is also a nice one :-)

Yes, or a mirror of the local feed on a large SD, etc.

Do not underestimate the time saved with WORKING dependencies... that are automatically
installed via an app installer.
