Probably a trivial question but how to I attach a Japanese model to e.g. the European electricity standard for recharging.  Do I need to buy a new power pack?  Would that be possible here in Japan?

Sharp other an ac adapter for the Zaurus range that does 100-240V - sorry can't remember the code, but it's been avaialable everywhere I've seen the Z for sale in Japan.

The other option is to buy a transformer - there are a number of different versions available, I picked up a cheap 240 -> 100 down step transformer for about 1000 yen in Den-Den town in Osaka and have successfully used it with my digital camera, Zaurus and my wife's hair dryer

You probably mean the EA-70S but is it available here in Japan?  Didn't find any Japanese web site.  What's the size and the weight of your transformer?

Hair dryers quite often come with a switch, at least mine has a 220V to 110V switch.   I use my electric razor just with a cheap world plug adaptor.  Would have been nice to do the same with the Z.

Well, then there is the CE-BC21 battery charger kit (which would mean removing the battery from the Z everytime :-() for 5500 Yen (seibetsu) but it doen't mention the C860.

I was in Bic Camera in Osaka yesterday and they had the 100-240V ac adapter there.

Did your world plug adaptor include a step down transformer? if so then it will probably work fine - but be warned that a number of north americans clamshell owners have reportedly blown the charging circuits on the Cxx0 models using the wrong adapters!

Well, back in Austria I have been told that a "real" transformator is a huge device with lot's of copper and is quite expensive.  Usually you wouldn't want to buy such a monster.

My plug adaptor is really small, looking just like a typical socket  in Europe but with 5 connectors for other country's sockets (so it is just made for European male plugs).  I just need to turn a wheel on top of it to the right position.  Hence,  I think that it doesn't do any transformation.  I think that task is left to the electrical device, and as I said earlier, some do just that.

The Z is shipped with the EA-72 with only does 110 V (Japanese standard).  With a simple adaptor I would grill it with 230 V at home.  So I guess my best bet is to buy the original Sharp model to ensure that I won't damage the circuitry.

I bought two of these AC adaptors, one for work and one for home. They work brilliantly, and use a USB plug for the power connection so that you can use the lead to charge from a USB socket (if the socket provides enough current).

They've gone up in price a bit since I got mine, but well worth it. Very compact and they also come with multiple plug socket connectors.

I quickly discovered that the power adapter for my wife's digital camera is perfect for my C860.  It is a multi voltage adapter taking 100 to 240V at 50/60Hz and gives a steady 5V and 2A ouput.  The connector is the same size and polarity required by the Z.

If you can find one it's a Fujifilm AC power adapter AC-5VHS.
