Gaim "bombs out"
« on: January 07, 2004, 10:38:50 am »
I installed Gaim a few weeks ago (after more than a fair share of hassles  ), and have got it working to the point where it logs in successfully to my MSN account, and brings up a dialogue box when I have new messages in my e-mail there.

However, when I tap the \"OK\" button to get rid of the box, Gaim basically closes down and returns me to the desktop. Maybe I\'m unfamiliar with the interface, but there doesn\'t seem to be a way to get past this dialogue box and start using the program.

Has anyone else experienced a similar problem?

Many thanks,
Tim

I didn\'t think of trying that  I\'ll link up to my home LAN, and let you know what comes up at the prompt.

Thanks,
Tim

Ah - it looks like I wasn\'t logged into ZUG last time. Oh well...

OK, so I start gaim at the terminal, and there are a lot of messages going through. (I tried capturing the output to a text file, with gaim ] gaimlog.txt, but that doesn\'t seem to work... or is that the best/right way?)  The last two messages which come up are:

account: bool setting found: check-mail, 1
msn: Destroying message

If this isn\'t enough, and you need more output, please let me know (along with any tips on how to capture the messages without me needing to type them out  ).

Many thanks,
Tim

try \"gaim 2] gaimlog.txt\" which I think saves both stdout and stderr (if it\'s not 2] it might be &] I can\'t remember)

\'gaim 2] gaimlog.txt\' will redirect the stderr stream (The error stream) to gaimlog.txt.

\'gaim ] gaimlog.txt 2]&1\' will redirect the stderr stream to the stdout stream (The normal output stream), which is in turn redirected to to gaimlog.txt, hence saving all messages in gaimlog.txt

Be careful if you post the entirety of gaimlog.txt as it will contain your usernames and passwords.

\'gaim &] gaimlog.txt\' also redirects both stout and stderr to the file (and is easier to remember, but not for me ;-)

Thanks for all the suggestions  I\'ve got a 6Kb text file, which I\'ll be editing down and (hopefully) posting in some form later today or tomorrow. (Haven\'t set up a working Samba/NFS connection between the Z and my PC yet, so I may have to get \"creative\"!)

More soon...

Thanks again,
Tim

I suddenly had the bright idea to use SCP, as SSH already works (though I\'ve yet to get PC-to-Z public key authentication working, but that\'s another story). Anyway, I have the file now, and am starting to chop out the passwords and such.

Right. I think I\'ve edited out all the e-mail addresses, names and passwords which could be of use to anyone - on the other hand, how much of the output would people actually need, to tell me what may be going wrong?

Thanks,
Tim

Thanks for the offer - I\'ll try and send it through to you later today. (I was a bit busy over the weekend, and besides I wasn\'t sure if I\'d edited out all the \"sensitive information\".)

Thanks again,
Tim.
