The Archos AV500
« on: July 15, 2004, 03:28:38 pm »
Looks like possibly the next generation of PDA is coming along - complete with hard drive. The only real example of this is the little-known-about Archos AV500, which is the third evolution of their AV300 series, which are actually Portable Media Players (Although not running under Windows like the coming bout of them) but the difference with this one is that its actually got a touchscreen, which really breaches the door between the PMP and PDA, and on top of everything else running on the Zaurus'  QTopia environment.

You can read more on it at http://www.mobilemag.com/content/100/337/C2626/ and http://www.ehomeupgrade.com/archives/000289.php

Just thought I'd show another device running Linux. That could be quite an exciting idea for the SL-960 (or whatever its going to be called)

Two camps definitely appear to be emerging, smart phones and portable media players (PMP), both with PDA capability.  The stand-alone non-multimedia PDA is dead and everyone is gravitating to pda phones with limited multimedia capability or PMPs with no or limited phone capability.

I'd love to see the new Zaurus Clamshell step forward as a full featured PMP and Linux laptop in your pocket type device.

Well, this device supports CF accessories, including bluetooth and wifi card.  Probably it may fare even better than ipod as we can exchange data with PCs, laptops and handhelds (Z of course!).  Although it isn't designed for serious computing and word processing, which Z handles so well by far, it will surely be an ideal handy mass storage device.
