Newbie linking problems
« on: August 18, 2004, 11:08:23 pm »
Hey guys, I need some help here, and I am sorry that I am a real newb at this.

I tried to install these three files:
Konqueror
xmms
zetherel (spelling)

they all gave me linking errors but Konqueror works, and the other two don't.  XMMS opens, but doesn't play anything, and zetherel doesn't even load.

I attached the errors that it gave me under the package manager.

Someone please help me.  I understand how linking works, but I don't understand what to link to what.

Thank you

I  assume you are using the original sharp rom and not openzaurus sence you are posting this in the newbie forum.  If this is the case then the following should help you:

Have you tried linking something manually?  Sorry, I don't have a clue why linking doesn't work.  You installed them as root right?  Anyway, here are some thoughts on the programs you are installing.

XMMS:  the xmms packages are not for the sharp rom (at least the latest xmms).  Though, it is possible to get it working by following the wonderful howto written by cmisip (thank you so much cmisip).
It can be found here: http://cmisip.home.insightbb.com/zaurus.htm  It is quite a ways down the page.  For the most part this howto worked for me.

zethereal:  I dont remimber having any problems installing that ipkg BUT, that version of zethereal never worked for me (that ipkg is v1.0).  I found zethereal v0.9 which works on my zaurus.  It wasn't in an ipkg so I had to just copy it to the /usr/bin directory and 'steal' the icon from the v1.0 package. And of course meet its dependencies.  I don't remimber where I got v0.9 from so if you want it just let me know and I can email it to you.

I have never tried konquiror.

If you are using openzaurus (you should have said so in the first place) then desregard all that I have posted.

I assume you're running OZ (from some of the packages which seem to be installed).

There are some failed links, but this is normal as ipkg attempts to traverse the entire directory and file set and make symlinks for everything. This is quite normal.

What I'd do is the following:

# ipkg-link mount /mnt/card

This will make sure the symlinks are in place.

Then restart Opie (using the shutdown applet on the Settings page). This will refresh the icons.

Lardman, thank you so much for the help, now they all work.

But now I am having another problem, are any of you guys familiar with GAIM?  I installed it fine, but whenever I try to connect, a little progress bar at the bottom goes to 100% really quickly, then nothing happens.

Thanks

I can use msn on gaim without troubles. If you start from the command line (the old war cry!) does it indicate that any sort of error is stopping it?

Probably best to move this to a new topic (or tack it on the end of one of the other gaim ones)

Here's the home page for zethereal:
http://www.cartel-securite.fr/pbiondi/zaurus/zethereal.html

I have been unsuccessful at getting the 1.0 version to run on the Sharp ROM (3.10).  I haven't tried the .9 version.  After creating my links and such, I then get an error about some missing libmodule (something like that).

I'll probably fuss around with it again shortly.  I broke down and loaded tcpdump in the meantime, which works great of course.

Hope that helps.
