Upgrade from ZR-5000
« on: January 01, 2004, 08:42:08 pm »
Hi All,

I just ordered a 5500 from eBay and will be expecting it in a few days. I currently use a ZR-5000 and am trying to find out if I can beam the old data to the new Z. Thank you.

What data are you wanting to send across?

you could possibly beam it across IR, but be prepared for a very long wait.

The best way of transferring pim data would be to sync it with outlook, then sync your new zaurus.

re install any apps you want to take across any other data (photo\'s mp3\'s etc) could be synced a number of ways.  The easiest is to use a cf or sd card, but you could use the file transfer program to transfer to a pc.

Thanks for the idea. I havn\'t got the program to sync with Outlook. Do you know where I can get it? BTW, the old unit is not an SL-5000D, it\'s a ZR-5000. That means no SD, CF, photo, apps, mp3. Just contact and PIM data. Sorry if that was unclear.

Ah,
I saw the 5000 bit and thought it you meant an sl5000.

OK hands up, I\'ve never heard of the zr5000, sounds more like a motorbike to me.

What coms does it have and I will try again.

The 5500 does have ir receive, I have used it with other pda\'s and phones so it may work.

The 5000 has IR send and receive, but I don\'t know about the file format. What I am expecting to see happen is the new machine will just take all of the old PIM data and store it in a raw format because it doesn\'t recognize the old format.

I don\'t actually know this though, they are both sharp zaurus products, but with about 6 years between them that makes them fairly distant relatives.

The reason I am asking without having actually experimented with the two machines is that I expect to need a filter, or conversion program of some kind. I also expect that finding one will be a chore, hence the pre-experimentation question.

Thanks for your help.

P.S. To actually answer YOUR question, besides the IR the zr-5000 has DB-9 serial, and the large style PCMCIA expansion slot.

would the pcmcia slot take a converter that converts pcmcia to cf?

Do you have a sync application to sync via the serial cable to a pc?

I have one of these, it works in my laptop and my cf card slots in the back.

They are pretty cheap if the zr5000 supports it.

The cf card will then just plug into the 5500.

If the zaurus receives a file by ir that it can\'t understand it will give an error, but the file can be found in a directory under  /tmp in its raw format.

I have imported .jpgs from a picture phone this way.

As for the format of the pim data being compatibly, sharp can\'t even keep compatability between roms on the 5500, never mind a machine from 6 years ago, so the chances are slim.

They only thing to do is to try it.  I was quite suprised when I beamed some contact details (from an old nokia phone) when they ended up in my address book.

My 5500 came in the mail today!! Sadly, the old one and the new one to not even want to talk over the IR beam. I tried with both manual and auto rec. mode on the 5500 and got nothing. Perhaps the older unit uses a diferent IR protocol.

I do have the \"PC link over serial\" setup so I guess I just have to try that.

Well thanks again for all of your help.
