Buying a new Z SL-C7x0 from Japan?
« on: July 07, 2004, 09:30:40 pm »
I have a friend who knows Japanese, and rather than going through a company like Dynamism, I was thinking of asking him to order a C7x0 from amazon.co.jp for me.   I checked the currency conversion, and it looks like I'd save at least $100 (maybe not after shipping).

I'm wondering if anyone has actually done this yet, and what problems they might have run into.  I'm sure I would just flash it right away with openzaurus, or some other ROM, so I'm not worried about the language settings.

I bought my SL-C750 in Tokyo last July, about two weeks after they were released. I knew absolutely nothing about it, didn't know whether I could change the language or anything.

It all turned out just fine. Just make sure that your friend will be willing to take it back to the shop for you it breaks.

Well I was thinking of ordering directly from amazon.co.jp, or another Japanese site, since he's not actually in Japan.

Does the Japanese amazon site accept American credit cards?  I assume they don't.  I know you can use Paypal between countries and currencies, but I doubt many retailers would accept Paypal.

The japanese amazon site, like its american and european counterparts, unfortunatly do not ship electronics worldwide. Books and CDs, sure, but electronics only to domestic buyers.

I bought my C750 from pricejapan.com, a company that does grey-exporting by actually ordering fromt he cheapest store in japan, adding 5% for their own profit, and sending it to you. If you know english, it works fine, if you know japanese it should work even better I suspect.

My 750 cost a total of 481 USD, which is a bargain if you ask me.

Wow, that's an amazing deal, I'll have to check out that site.  Thanks!

Yup, this is exactly what I did.  A pal in Tokyo got one for me and sent it to me directly.  No probs.  Well, in fact the only problem I had was with Thai customs (I live in Bangkok), who wanted ~$80 in customs duties and took an extra 3 days and many, many stamped forms to complete.  It was an experience in its own right. java script:emoticon(':o')

But all-in-all I still saved about $400 over Dynamism (as I bought other accessories as well inc a second battery) as they price at a premium.  Dynamism and the like also ship thru UPS/FedEx, which is quite pricey to my part of the world plus tend to look at customs tariffs as a profit center in its own right.  I also tried other online/ebay vendors vendors, but most of them would not ship to SouthEast Asia or would only do so at very high cost.  I have bought other gear thru Dynamism before, and they do provide a good service, but this time I decided to do it myself for the aforementioned reasons  and have not suffered.

Your milage may vary!

860 can be found for about 55,000Y, the 6000 seems to be over 70,000 (there are different flavours 6000L, 6000N annd 6000W, whatever that means). www.kakaku.com is a handy guide.
