Whither the SL-6000 ?
« on: December 08, 2003, 05:49:18 pm »
If I remember correctly, the first SL-6000 model was scheduled for release in Japan early in December.
Has anyone caught sight of one yet?

shhhh. lets keep quite even if we saw one, lest the world comes to know of it ...

Ha, at least me thinks thats the way Sharp would like it to be, all hush hush. Where the press releases (apart from that one lone PR release), where the publicity blitz, where the visibility ?

Sony and all other companies seem to give out stories and pocs and specs to the press before the models are even released so that the market is buzzing with interest and everyone is looking forward to them, but Sharp marketing is of course a different story.

I never heard that the SL-6000 was being released in Japan at all. I thought it was a US only model as it was a joint development between Sharp USA and IBM.

And of course, it\'s an \"enterprise product\" so perhaps some hapless telecom field service grunts are already being issued SL-6000s without even knowing what they\'re getting...

I mean I don\'t expect much of a splash for a gadget positioned like this. I feel Sharp+IBM are marketing this one directly in boardrooms. The rugged shell is not something a consumer would pay extra $$ for (with rare exceptions).

Actually sharp japan made an official announcement about the 6000 and also stated that it had not announced plans to sell it outside of japan.

Of course SharpUSA has the announcement that it *will* be selling the 6000

Those two really don\'t like each other , do they?

There\'s this article here which has details of the three models of SL6000 to be released in the US.
http://www.brighthand.com/article/Sharp_Un...s_SL-6000?site=

But of course first they are supposed to be released in Japan on Dec 10, Dec 24, and January 23 respectively.

So I guess tomorrow is the day in Japan when there may be some word on the actual release of one model at least.

Is it true that it won\'t have a compact flash slot without adding an extra \"sleeve\" like described in the brighthand article linked above?

Mirko

The sleeve will add a second CF slot.  At least that is want I understand from www.ezaurus.com where is says(with the help of babel fish):

Loading USB host interface. At the time of selling separately CF expansion-adapter installing, 2 CF cards, charge pond 2 simultaneous enabled

also the pics that ofrdgeek took appears to have a CF and SD built in...

CF expansion Adapter

CF card slot (1 slot equipment)
Lithium polymer charge pond EA-BL09 bundled (1)
Serial port (simultaneous use failure with I/O port for serial cable CE-170TS connection and substance)
Size: Approximately 81.9mm (width) × approximately 160.5mm (depth) × approximately 20.2mm - approximately 24.3mm (thickness)

I believe this is an image of the SL-6000 with the Expansion Adapter
