« on: October 11, 2004, 03:26:09 am »
I was able to install OZ 3.5.1 and it seemed to work OK.  However, when I logoff, I am presented with a green screen with a keyboard and a white box above it.  When this screen is showing, I am unable to do anything.  A reset (even removing the battery) will cause cause OZ to reboot but then I am presented with the same screen.

One thing I did notice.  When booting, it displays this message at the very bottom:
RAMDISK:  unable to find valid RAM disk starting at 0

Does anyone know what my problem might be?

Thanks

Sounds like the standard GPE login screen. You should be able to select a username from the top dropdown and then enter the password, either using the standard Z keyboard or the onscreen one.

If thats not working I can only assume something is wrong with your install, but fixing it... Over to someone a little more familiar with GPE.

Have you removed the fonts or pango packages. I had this a long while back with one of the hacked together images.

I had to use the drop down box (even though there was nothing in it) to select root (the top one), then stick in my password and log in, etc.

The RAMDISK thing is a kernel oddity which is just cosmetics and won't harm anything - so just ignore it. It won't be fixed btw., since no one wants to look into that ancient kernel.

I haven't changed anything.  This happens the first time I try to log out.  I downloaded the files from the OZ website.

Would you please explain more in detail exactly what to do since all I have is a white box and keyboard?  Where do I click to drop down, where do I click to select root, etc?

I retract my previous statement jrktriger, I have since tried logging off of gpe (as root) and have now been presented with the same screen you have reported.

I will take a picture of it later so we can compare your symptoms with mine.

So far I've tried a hard reset and a format from the maintenance menu and neither have managed to get me past this locked login screen.

Stay tuned...

This is the problem as I see it:

As you can see, it resembles the gpe login screen but without most of the input boxes and other useful widgets.

Hi,
I had the same promblem setting user info. The next time I flashed I leaved user info as it was and the problem was away. I think it was with the first gpe release.

You could try typing in your passwords (root then your default user - one at a time of course) into the white box and then press enter to see if you can log-in.

Other than that I don't know.

This was confirmed by the good people in #gpe irc last night, various devices were fired up to try and replicate the results. (although I only ever fired the owner info app once, and never actually entered any data)

As far as we could ascertain with some minimal fiddling was that deleting the userinfo seemed to get it working again. Of course you really need to be able to terminal in via the default serial tty on the Z in order to make any changes to the filesystem.

I personally never managed this (my debian kernel needs upgrading as I get usb errors when I plug the Z in) but Florian managed to revive a Simpad via this method

lardman: I'll give your idea a try later on this evening and report back... other than that it looks like a reflash unless you can get at the default getty.

After reflashing if you go to Settings/Owner Information and you press OK, log out and you will have the problem.

If you press Cancel there is no problem and it is not necessary to change anything before pressing OK.

I can't solve it, I don't know how to do it and where to send this mail.

I'll keep the guys on #gpe informed, I'm sure they're now aware of the problem, but I'll make sure they know the specifics that have been mentioned here.
