Unfortunately, I can see them making these a virtual clone of Palm OS (complete with limitations such as "everything-is-a-database"), rather than depart from their well-recognized function. They wouldn't want to immediately put off their existing users by introducing something totally foreign.
In other words, develop a "FreePalmOS" that saves them money. One would hope some clever OE-er would figure out a way to install Opie, et al., on there regardless though.
On the other hand, what I WOULD like to see is the ability to buy a Palm device, log onto the Palm One web site, download an OS of my choice, and flash it. Especially if I could download whatever Linux brew they come up with for free, and pay a couple bucks for Symbian if I wanted. I love my Z, but there are still times I miss my Series 5.
