Reason For Upgrading Zi?
« on: December 08, 2004, 07:11:22 am »
I owned a Zi 5500 (as stated in the signature)
And I planned to change my Zi....coz...
- the battery life sux....(making a battery box for that)
- faster (is it really that important?)
-satisfaction (I guess that's the *reason*)

My friend owned a C-700 and I used to play w/ it....
(He is the one who sold his 5500 to me.)
And I figure out the function of both 700 and 5500 are virtually the same..
PIM, mp3s, notes taking, web browsing, GAIM, fun.....
(Tho the CG silicon and the LONG battery life are pretty attractive..)

Hence, it is not convincing enough for me to upgrade my Zi.....

That's why I want to know your reasons of changing Zi.....

G5 notebook should be releasing @ the year 2005 spring....
And I hate my Dell.....

Might be I should save  some $$ ($$ comes from 2005 summer job )  for upgrading my laptop.

Reason For Upgrading Zi?

I'm thinking of upgradeing my Z but it's not the same as you as I'm planning to move from a sl-C860 to a sl-c3000 ... in my case it's a lack of internal memory in the sl-cxxx which is leading me to this choice as I really except my Z to be a handtop computer ...
So I'm gonna resume my pros and cons for upgrading my Z maybbe you'll recognise some of yours

pros : more internal memory (4Gb instead of 128Mb ... great for a wifi usage )
USB host  (I was planning on buying a ratoc CFU-1 USB host when they released the c3000)
better CPU (still dreaming one day we'll have a 2.6.x kernel support for the zaurus and then be able to use the MMX instructions of the PXA270 cpu used)

cons : lack of alternatives to stock sharp rom
price for such a little upgrade (btw I have a friend who want to buy my 860 so I won't have to pay that much )

btw in your case you'll have more roms to use if upgrading to a sl-cxxx serie than with your 5500 as you should then discover the pdaXrom ...
you should also get more internal memory than your 5500 if you choose a c860 or a c3000 and get more cpu power from it (PXA255 instead of PXA250) btw I don't know 5x00s series enough to give you a better advice  and I've never tested any... What I can tell you is that I used a pockePC with that form factor and I've finally fallen in love with the clamshell design (beside I really hate phone clamshell design) and being able to switch from a classic pda form factor to a mini-laptop form factor ... I think that's what have been the real thing that made me bought a sl-c860 when i had choice between 860 and 6000 series

just seen that also

Panasonic SD 256 RAM <- can't manage to put ext2 in it
you should try an "ext2-in-a-file" solution if you really need ext2 on it by creating a file and then loop mount it ... there's a thread with a how-to just do a search

SL-C3000 - pdaXrom 1.1.0Beta1
SL-C860 - pdaXrom 1.1.0 RC8 (charging circuitry dead :( )
CF RamStar 512 Mb / Hitachi 4Gb microdrive (thanks to creative's muvo² :p)
SD Sandisk 1Gb / Viking 256 Mb
Linksys WCF13 CF wifi card

Anyone willing to donate for my work, please consider donate to pdaXrom and/or OE/OZ projects instead, I wouldn't have been able to do anything without them ...

well, my reason for upgrading is that the mighty SL-5000D is just a touch low on storage/memory even running the 32-0 image and using an SD card.  Additionally, the better screen and USB host (I "bought" one of the $300 Z6Ks... sigh) were extra bonuses.

Ah well.

Well, the better screen, Clamshell FF, and long battery life were more than sufficient for me to upgrade my Z.

I have a 5000 and a 5500, and neat as they were, and as much as I could do with them, they didn't hold a candle to my Palm for day to day use due to the pathetic battery life. They also fell short on the portable computer side due to the screen (bad contrast, low resolution - trying to use the console was painful), and lack of CPU power (for movies, etc).

Fast forward several months and I use the 860 - mind blowing screen, 8hrs battery life, fast CPU,  and the multimedia remote.

I ended up ditching the Palm, my mp3 player, and my laptop simultaneously. Because I use it so heavily I plan to pick up another as backup. (If you use your PDA to run your life, ALWAYS have a backup strategy.  ) Since the 3000 has come out I'll get one of those instead and the 860 will be my backup and experimental platform  (That 4gigs of space without tying up the SD slot is *really* tempting. )
Fujitsu U8240 "Stormtrooper" -  Zaurus Supplement
Libretto U100 | Sony Librie, Sony Reader
SL-C3100: Sharp 1.11JP (Kanji Dictionary/Translator) - LCD Top swap with C1000.
SL-C3000: pdaXii13 5.4.7, SL-C3000 5.4.9 - microdrive replaced with 8gb Sandisk
SL-C1000: PDAXRom Beta3 | SL-6000L: Sharp 1.12 | SL-5500: Cacko, 64-0 kernel | SL-5000D: OZ-Opie
Linksys WCF12; Sharp CE-AG06, CE-RH2, CE-170TS; iRiver USB OTG Host cable; Socket BT rev.E CF; Hitachi 6gb Microdrive

Well, the battery life and the screen really SUX compare to CGsilicon....
As well as the CPU speed.....

(that's why I am making a battery box for it, but, it is still missing the solder part  coz my friend do not return my solder gun yet  )

In my view,
5500 basically have the same function as 860.
- video (yeap, crappy, but I still able to watch it)
-PIM
- mp3 (5500 and 860 also use the same audio chipset, Toshiba)

I only use console in my laptop thro puty, yeah, it is a pain in the ass to use console under 5500.

ThC:
Seems is the problem of that card.
My friend even helped me to format it under Linux-debian desktop, Mac laptop, his Zi 700.....
But all come to a failure..
My digitfilm SD card works fine tho.

If you type a lot you might want to take a good hard look at the Apple 12inch latops.
At the same time, you might also want to wait and see whether Trolltech comes out with an SL3K ROM, which will eat the crap out of the stock Sharp ROM.
