Address Book And Calendar Export To Palm
« on: December 01, 2004, 05:28:15 am »
Hello,

I want to transfer my calendar and address book data on my zaurus to my new Palm PDA.

Unfortunately, my Zaurus has no desktop sync so I need to export to a SD card.

Could anyone give me a hint about how to do this ?

Thanks,

MDErdem

It depends on the Zaurus model you have. There is two database formats. If it happens you have a not so old model, you have the DTM database and you are out of luck since I don't think it is possible to import data or convert to Palm format (.pdb). If you have a old enough model, the format of the databases is XML, I know there is some tools to convert pdb to XML, but I don't know if the reverse is possible.

Thanks dsavard,

I have a Zaurus SL-5500 with Qtopia 1.5 (Linux Kernel 2.4.18). How can I figure out which db format it is using ?

If you have files with suffix .IDX in a directory /home/zaurus/Applications/dtm, you are doing DTM. For XML, I don't know where are the files and their names.

If you want to program, it would be feasible to write an application to migrate DTM <-> .pdb, but I don't know any application existing today and doing that. And given the fact that in a near future most people will probably migrate to OZ or some not Sharp ROM with different PIM applications, this may not worth the effort for someone to write such an application. And, of course, it's not in the genes of Z afficionados to ease the migration to Palm devices... Seriously, it requires some knowledge of .pdb which Z afficionados may not find very useful to acquire.

you say you don't have desktop sync, can you set it up for a while? The intellisync software that came with your Z will syncronize with Palm desktop. This was to get your data from Palm, but it works out 2 ways just fine for me. (my wife uses the old palm, and we shared most contacts so I found it easier to do that)

Another alternative way would be to just beam the data from the Z to the Palm using the infrared port. I know it works from Palm to Z, so it should work in the reverse direction. It is not as simple as just syncing, but this way you should be able to beam most of your data. You will probably have to define yourself the categories and take care to beam everuthing at the right place, or you may beam everything in an unclassified category and move everything after that.
