Installing A Offline Web Reader To 6000l
« on: January 25, 2005, 11:23:15 am »
I want to have an offline readerto cache web sites (of my choice) and read them at leisure on the train ride back home.

What are the feasable solutions that work on the 6000 ?

Tried wwwoffle - when installing the ipk thru GUI it says ipk install failed, thru terminal I get a segmentation fault.

So instead I bought the Zepo  - it installs fine, but when I run it by clicking on the icon, nothing happens at all.
From the terminal when I run 'runzepo' also nothing at all - just comes back to the prompt again.

Also, can these offline caches actually cache the whole site (i.e. stories behing the main links on the first page, or just the story that is open) ?
Of course I dont want to cache the whole site for big news sites which would fill up my whole memory (external too) - but I want just stories linked on main page.

You could try Plucker with Opie-Reader or JustReader. The plucker distiller is normally run on the desktop and the results copied to the Zaurus but you can get a non-gui version working on the Zaurus if you install python first. Plucker is at www.plkr.org (IIRC)

If you need something which does the downloading on the Zaurus which doesn't need a big install I have a version of rbmake which will work on the Zaurus and is compatible with opie-reader. It has a rudimentary GUI and hasn't been tested extensively yet but having a few users would motivate me to improve it 8^).

plucker in connection with the opie-reader is a very good option!
you can also open local files with the opera browser with file://local-html

@TimW: is there any development concerning non-free ebook formats,
which the opie-reader can't handle? let me ask in another way: do you
know some useful converting tools for such formats,  linux tools:-) maybe
also windows tools, which run under wine or qemu...

I use jPluck on my Linux workstation.  I list the news sites that I'm interested in and save off a config file.  Then I have cron jobs that run several times through the day to pluck the news and create a tar/gzip file which I ftp to my webserver.

Then when out and about with my Z, if I can get a connection, I have a script to pull the gzip file from my server, unzip/tar it.  At that point, I can use Opie-Reader to veiw the sites.

opie-reader can read a few non-free formats already (rb, MobiPocket, iSilo 3) but it doesn't have any code to circumvent DRM so if you have a protected document I'm afraid opie-reader won't be able to help you.

I have bought MS Reader .lit files in the past and used Convert Lit to unpack them and then repacked them with MobiPocket, rbmake or Plucker. I believe there is a version of "clit" (as the binary is called) available for the Zaurus but I haven't used it.

If anyone knows how to read any other closed format files I know someone who lives in a non DMCA country who could probably provide plug-ins for opie-reader.

Allright, getting back to wwwoffle - I tried installing it and as I mentioned - it gave a segmentation fault during install (GUI or command line)

But neverthless when I did go into /etc and other directories I saw the wwwoffle binaries and the wwwoffle.conf file in the correct locations and then /etc/rc.d/init.d/wwwoffle start did start up the daemon wwwoffled, which shows in the ps -ef output.

So I fired up my wireless connection,
went to opera and did the http://localhost.com/8080/control/ page
and setup up Slashdot.org and news.bbc.co.uk (I dont rely on US news media for news)
as the pages to fetch - 'recursively for 1 level down'
did a wwwoffle -fetch from command line as well as the control page.

My /var/cache/wwwoffle is getting filled up with many pages etc.

Fine till now.

So I do a wwwoffline -offline, close down my wifi connection and do a
http://localhost.com/8080/#indexes to see the indexes

I see the indexs for Slashdot and BBC, when I click on them I go to the respective index for each site, but when I click on the site link, it tries to connect to
http://www.slahdot.org   or to http://news.bbc.co.uk and hence asks for a network connection

What gives ?

How am I supposed to read the files offline ?

I am a newbie to wwwoffle, so need some pointers as to how to really set this up to read the pages offline.

Note : all this is on my 6000L. I dont like the solution of getting things on the desktop and then sync (or FTP) to the Zaurus. I want to be as disconnected from the desktop as possible.

Thanks in advance.
