Moderator: Please Stop Moving My Posts !
« on: February 01, 2005, 03:57:42 am »
I posted a message about a general newbie question regarding the 6000L:.  As I stated in my my post I had done searching in the 6000L area and found nothing that worked for me.

THIS IS THE GENERAL AREA.  MORE SPECIFICALLY, THIS AREA GETS THE MOST ATTENTION, HENCE THE REASON I USED IT.

Almost every post here could be split into another forum as the user will specify a certain model.  Yet, I don't see that happeneing.  Sometimes posts are moved by model and other times they are not.....Even when the Model number is in the post title !

This whole moving idea needs to be rexamined.  The General forums are for ALL models and for NO Models. in particular. More specifically,  this general forum is the best place to get exposure to your post as most people visit this forum and perhaps one or two others.

So unless you plan to move every single post that mentions a model number (thereby killing this General forum) , I suggest that you only move them when absolutely necessary.

Granted this is a subjective matter, but the 6000L forum does not get the amount or depth of audience that this forum gets.  And more over, someone may have insight into my issue that they experienced with another model.

I could see moving the post if I was doing a FOR SALE or  a DEAL POST, but when I am tallking about a Z uissue and have already done some research, I think after 400+ posts you could safely assume that I put the post here FOR A REASON.

I would appreciate it if you would move my post BACK to this forum, as I would like to get a response before I die of old age.

Thanks.

You already got a response where the post was moved (thereby showing that the 6000L forum does get a read)

And not to worry, you will not die of old age here in these forums, what with the buzz and posting frenzy over here.

Nilch,

Thanks for the reply here and in the other forum, but I really think my argument here has merit.

I still say that general is for issues regarding a model, where you are hoping that someone had seen the same issue on another model.  Otherwise, what is the point of the general forums ?

If general forum are "for all things Z" , but for no model in particular, then I would say General should be a pretty dead forum...but it is not---precisely becuase people specify model-specific questions.

I understand the need to categorize posts....but general forums (by nature) should be given a wide berth when it comes to this issue.  Like I keep saying, General gets the MOST exposure and that (in and of itself) is something that is sometimes specifically needed.

Regards,
O

As a moderator of another forum, I'd figured I'd weigh in.
Will more exposure from SL-5500, SL-5600, SL-CXXX help with a problem directly related to the SL-6000 (such as USB)? Probably not. Will it add cludder, and make SL-6000 issues harder to find? Probably so. Moving posts that better fit a sub-category is a good way to help you get the answer you need, as well as help others find it later on.

If it had not been moved, that would still be true. If it hasn't been answered there before, why is that a reason not to post there?

If someone asks about something not related to a particular model(changing QTopia icons for instance), but have a particular model in the title, why move it?

I haven't read your thread, so I can't say for sure this is what happened. There does seem to be alot of arbitrary moves, though. Archos PMA400 posts being moved to 'Everything else', whereas other non-released Linux PDA threads are left here in the General forum.

Par for the course when dealing with people. I've approved new forum categories that weren't requested as much over forum categories that had a lot more votes. From the outside it may have looked completely arbitrary, but the forum category that was more requested would have made excess fragmentation with little gain, whereas the forum category I added actually helped the subject.

This is exactly the mindset that we're trying to move away from in the forums.  Your topic was specific to the 6000, which is why I moved it to the 6000 General Discussion forum.  The "General Discussion" part of that title means that any post specific to the 6000 can AND SHOULD be put in that forum.

I do my best (as I'm sure the other admins do) to review the General forum and move posts accordingly.  This will continue to happen, until I hear a *justifiable* reason not to.

I think you discredit our community if you assume that only owners of a 6000 read the 6000 specific forums.  Besides, the "view new posts" shows all new posts regardless of which forum it was posted in.

Indeed, as you stated yourself, you posted this topic in the General forum because of the visibility.  Many others have done this too, and those topics get moved as well.

You will get plenty of response in the 6000 forum...   I won't move it back to this forum for the simple reason that we are continually trying to clean up the forums, and if we have to tend to individual requests to keep posts in specific forums... then we will grow old and die from dealing with these tedious requests

I surrender.

Although I still have not been convinced that it HAD to be moved....but that is hardly important as these are not my forums.  I appreciate your efforts all the same.

Thanks for the feedback.

At least I know how to get your attention (just kidding.....inside joke).
