X11 Virtual Resolution
« on: February 14, 2005, 10:55:55 am »
Hi,

I'd like to know whether it is possible to change the virtual resolution of the X server.
I use fvwm and it always needs a restart after a switch from portrait to landscape and
vice versa.
With a quadratic virtual resolution I hope it suffice to change the EWMH_BASE STRUTS.

Or perhaps someone has another solution for fvwm to handle xrandr without restart (a patch...)?

I'm very interested in this, too. Please tell me if you get any solution for this problem.

Bump..
Anyone?
I'd like to see a solution too as I prefer fvwm but not being able to change resolution easily has kept me from a full switch over from ROX/Openbox.

Christoph: does this explain why xrand to reduce resolution to 320x420 in fvwm & used with mplayer only shows a quarter of the screen?

Hm,

seems there are less fvwm users than I thought.

I'm not sure. At least in the "old days of XFree 3.3.6" when you decreased the
resolution the virtual resolution rested the same and only a part of the screen was
shown.

I suspect that the resolution is set at compile time. xrandr only offers the two we know of. I submitted a feature request. Perhaps the developers have the time to look at it.
