Help To Find My Way!
« on: December 13, 2005, 11:40:39 pm »
Hi,

Let's be direct: I'm 100% beginner to linux, but got a C3K and would like to know how to explore it, and develop basic applications. I know a but of Unix.

Would any of you be kind enough to indicate me where to start:

any good book on linux embedded, which would have information I could use for the zaurus?

any web site with introductory material?

With the little knowledge I have I find it hard to follow the threads, and to find my way in all the informations.

Thanks!

Greetings.

Two good places to start: The "What I Wish I Knew as a Newbie" thread (https://www.oesf.org/forums/index.php?showtopic=16442) and the C3k specific threads (see links from the top-level forum list).

Those two places are probably good areas to start.
Welcome to the Z community!

Also the book "Linux in 24hrs" helped me with some of the more linuxie stuff like the console and symlinks which can help get your Z working just the way you want.  You could try a Linux CD distro like Knoppix to get the hang of how linux works also.

You'll need to know this stuff: http://www.tldp.org/LDP/Linux-Filesystem-Hierarchy/html/

In fact there are lots of docs on this site - http://www.tldp.org/

There's a getting started guide in here: http://www.tldp.org/guides.html

Lots of HowTos & FAQs too.

Thanks for all your help and links, and Ceffyl for your welcome message.
I'll check that out, now I'm off to go to test WLAN ICs, probably until tonight.

I would also like to mention:
https://www.oesf.org/index.php?title=Developing
which seems to be a real good starting point.

By the way, anyone knows why the ipktools on meanie's web site couldn't be unzip on my winXP? It says it is corrupted. Can I unzip it on the zaurus?
