Anyone In The Uk Imported Zaurii From Japan
« on: March 24, 2005, 12:09:44 pm »
Ah yes this is what i forgot to ask....

Since i'm in the UK and cannot afford to pay over the odds, is it worth getting a unit from PriceJapan since they seem to have the lowest prices. Am i likely to get caught for tax and duty charges, if so its probably not worth it is it?

I can't say anything about pricejapan but I used Japan-Direct.  They're not as cheap but I had no problems with customs and was able to track the progress of the order as in travelled the world...

My Z was labled as a PDA translator and as a gift.  I can't remember if it had a stated price or not.

I think the fact that the Z is v compact and light, and thus the parcel tends to be small and light, helps a lot. HMCE will assume that there's nothing of real value as the parcel is too small and light to be significant.

You're probably better off getting it labelled as "child's toy", as the usual "gift" or "commercial sample" is too well known now.

I think you'll find that computers up to a value of £500 are not subject to VAT. I'm sure you can check the exact details for yourself if you look up the Customs web site.

BTW, I have bought Zaurii via Dynamism in the past with no problems.

I'd be interested in a link as I searched high & low for this info before I bought and couldn't find anything.

I also note that I was charged import duty & VAT on a SerialIO serial cable from the US (the cable being worth about £10 iirc).

P.S. I got mine from Japan Direct too.

Personally I get very pissed off with people who post this sort of disinformation without any corroborating reference. To prove it wrong means spending hours on research.

This link will clear up a lot of questions though not the ‘computers under £500’ issue which I believe to be incorrect but can’t yet be definitive.

If you purchase goods through the Internet you should be aware that Customs duty and VAT will be payable, as follows:
Customs duty - if the amount of duty is £7 and over and
Import VAT - if the value of the goods is £18 and over.
Note: Some unscrupulous overseas suppliers openly advertise on the internet, or on their web-sites that they will deliberately either misdescribe items or underdeclare their value in order to evade customs charges that are legally due on importation. You should be aware that although the foreign sender may have completed the customs declaration form on the parcel you are regarded (in law) as the importer of the goods and responsible for the information on the declaration, and any customs charges that may be due. This means that if you purchase goods from these suppliers and the declaration is found to be false or misleading you may be liable to financial penalties or criminal prosecution. Furthermore the goods themselves will be liable to forfeiture. It is in your own interests to ensure Customs declarations are completed properly.

Note the last sentence; we can’t say that we weren’t warned and it really would be best for those customers of PriceJapan and Japan-Direct to be more discreet in their postings concerning this matter. Otherwise the implication is that we as future customers are complicit in this ‘misdescription’ and therefore potentially liable for prosecution.

You're right to point out that legally the declaration must be correct and the package is legally subject to tax.

However you are quite wrong to imply that PriceJapan or JapanDirect indulge in the kind of mislabelling mentioned on the HMCE website, for which their customers might be liable.

I have ordered from PriceJapan and at no stage did they offer to label my order as a gift or anything other than what it was.

Japan Direct's website does not offer that either.  They do point out that the majority of their customers report not having been asked to pay any tax, which is a very different thing.

I didn’t mean to imply that those suppliers were mislabelling, my remarks were more directed at the postings which were suggesting blatant practise. However thank you for that clarification, it is a relief to hear it.

The Customs & Excise position on palmtop computers is Standard Duty: Free; VAT: 17.5%.

The belief that there is a £500 exemption limit is untrue.

Anyway, now that I know there is no risk of falling foul of Customs & Excise. I am running out of reason to procrastinate on a new CL1000.
