Is The Sl-5500 Ok? Or Get A Higher Model
« on: May 03, 2005, 01:53:08 pm »
I want a Zaurus, for an organizer and playing game emulators. I see the basic model is the 5500 but now I just saw a 5600. Am I safe just getting the 5500 or was there ever some HUGE fix or improvement in a higher model?

5600 has a faster processor than the 5500 (twice the frequency).  It also has the option of a larger battery.  Apart from that the hardware is the same.  If you can get the 5600 for a reasonable price and all you want is the organiser and some games, go for it.

I have a 5500 and it has been a constant disappointment to me, but I wanted it for admin functions in work.  If you want to do something similar I'd suggest a more recent model eg C860.  Bigger screen, more options when it comes to roms.

The 5600 has only 32Mb or RAM, the 5500 has 64Mb.

If your choice is between the two, I'd go for the 5500.

You'll also find that support for the 5600 in terms of the number and polishedness of ROMs is no where as good as for the 5500 (as fewer devs ever bought 5600s).

If you can, I'd stretch to a clamshell model (anything but a C700 which again only has 32Mb or RAM).

If you wonder why I'm going on about the memory, do a search of the forum for 'swap' and see the troubles people have when there isn't enough.

Just my opinion of course,

lardman,

on the topic of upgrading ... i was thinking about eventually trying to get an sl 6000.  my hesitations have been the decline of the zaurus community -- especially the dev community; part of the reason i ask you is because i remember you from the devnet forums when i joined up there.  i've been away from the community for a while now, is the community now stable enough for that type of an investment to be worthwhile?
