Opinions On Movie Watching On C1000
« on: May 06, 2005, 03:18:25 pm »
I'm replacing my Jornada 720 suite with a C1000.  The J720 used (I believe) a DSTN type display which was not too great, but it worked alright.  You *could* watch a full length movie on it with Betaplayer if you shrank the movie down to <= 225mb if you didn't mind it hitching occasionally and being a little fuzzy to begin with.

But as I am forging on ahead with this C1000 purchase I am wondering if I will see any great improvement.  The screen is higher resolution, and the CPU is 2X as fast so I should think it will be able to render better. But I've heard one or two people in HERE say that video playback was 'terrible' on the C1000.  Would the C860 do even better with it's dedicated ATI video hardware ?

Just curious what other peoples experiences have been watching full length movies on the  C series of Z's in general, and the C1000 in particular.

 Thanks!

The movie playback on the 1k/3k series is a little rough at the moment, due to it being newer hardware. That being said, a newer mplayer was just released in the last couple of days that seems to work pretty well, with reports of the ability to playback 640x480 files.

The Cxk series has better potential for video playback because of the WMMX instructions in the newer processor. It will certainly be able to match the 860 given a little time. The video player is currently under very active development.

 Thanks again Kahm!

I take this to mean that currently the best video OVERALL is to be found on the C860, correct ?

Well...I've seen vid playback on a stock SL-5500, IT was better than my Jornada.  Is the C1000 in stock trim (ie with the embedded player) at least better than the SL-5500 ?

I haven't played with the stock player much. From what I've seen, it plays very nicely as long as you encode in the particular mpeg format that it expects. What I was referring to in my other post was the mplayer port, which allows playback of more file formats.

The 860 may have the best playback right now, but the mplayer port for the Cxk has had no less than two updates this week. I fully expect that they'll have the bugs out extremely quickly.

C1k/C3k video playback is better than c860... higher resolution.
Gorgeous C860, 256 Sandisk SD, 1Gig Pretec 40x CF, PDAIR leather case & the really cool retractable iPDA USB sync/charge cable. Powered by PDAXROM BETA 1.

My wish - to have a Command & Conquer style game on my Z! (FREECNC!!!) Simcity 2000 would also be great.
