Newbie's Questions About C1000

Hi!  This is my very first post here!!  

I am totally new to zaurus (and linux in general) and I am waiting for my new C1000 to be delivered by my friend who's now running on his shopping rush in Tokyo.  

I am planning to use this small-yet-powerful machine as my laptop replacement.  So one big concern to me is security in networking.  While setting up firewalls and antivirus apps are familiar when using my laptop, what measures should a newbie such as I take and how?   After searching the posts here and having browsed through the unofficial FAQ and how-to documents, I have yet to find some good solutions to networking security.  

Another question concerns the filesystems of memory cards.  I have a RiData SD 1gb and a Kingston CF 512mb.  My impression of the discussions here is that many users go for the ext2 filesystem (I am used to the FAT and FAT32 formats).  But I wonder if this formatting will work on other devices, such as digital cameras.  

It would be great if someone can share their knowledge and experience here.  Thanks!

I hope I can give you some simple answers

Security: I dont think there are any Viruses for the Zaurus around, for firewalling look [a href=\"https://www.oesf.org/forums/index.php?showtopic=8318&hl=firewalling]here[/url]

Memory Cards: Will not work in the most devices (like Digicams, PocketPC, Palm, or a PC running Windows) if you format them with ext2

also If you want to use the Z as a Notebook replacement I would go for the C3000 the 4gig Microdrive is a dream I dont want to remember the days when I owned a PDA without one   It also saves you the money to go and buy an other SD if you run out of Memory

Thanks for your tips, orange.  Actually the reason I go for a C1000 is it's selling at such a low price in Japan (40,000~45,000 yens) and I am just thinking my available cards can make up for the lack of a  microdrive in C1000.

Viruses are not much of a factor for Linux systems in general; and ARM-Linux even less so than i386 Linux, due to the scarcity of that platform. You might try  Clam AV if your work environment absolutely requires antivirus protection, but, no current or historic viruses target Linux on ARM, so it's really not needed.

ext2 is the native filesystem format for Linux;  it's preferred for linux-only systems (and if you want to install programs to SD or CF, strongly preferred) but you should be fine using FAT for data, and FAT should work fine on other devices as well.
One thing to watch out for- you should keep at least one card formatted in FAT16 (not FAT32) in case you ever need or want to reflash or update the OS on your Zaurus; for some reason, Zaurus updating requires explicitly FAT16 and not any other FAT or ext type format.

Thank you very much to all of you.

I have already got a usb-mini A cable from Trisoft (really excellent service!) and the machine is coming next week.   My friend got it in Akihabara for 40,370 yens only (just at the same range of a new palm or ppc) - what a steal!  I regret for not asking him to buy one or two accessories, such as like CF wifi, screen protector, and usb things and so on, alongside, but there are just easy ways to make up for that.

A bit surprised to see so many people are getting their C1000 lately.  To me the price and the black case are indeed the biggest attractions.
