Quick question about C700 & pdaX rom
« on: July 27, 2004, 04:31:29 pm »
I read that the C700 has 64MB internal storage, and 32MB for RAM by default.  Does this mean it might be possible to use the entire 96MB as RAM when installing the pdaX rom?  I'm on the verge of ordering a Cxx0, and if it's possible to use up to 96MB on the C700, while using a SD card for storage, that could save me a lot.

This question must have been answered somewhere, but I couldn't find an answer.

Just a quick answer: no, you can't use 96Mb as RAM on C700. Flash and RAM are physically different, and are not interchangeable. C700 has 64 mb flash and 32 mb RAM, and that's it -- the specs say it right.

That's good to know, thanks!  I guess that means they're physically different memory types than my 5500, which I wasn't aware of.

I guess I'll save my pennies for a model with at least 64MB

Well, not exactly. The pdaXrom installer requires you to repartition the flash to increase the size of ROM. So you aren't stuck with the default configuration.  However, to do as you want you'd need to have the pdaXrom rootfs build your own initrd.bin with everything you want to install (leaving enough room for the kernel too of course). Not very practical as changing installed programs that are in ROM requires rebuilding initrd.bin and reflashing.

Better solution is to just use SD to store/install that which won't fit in your internal memory after you flash pdaXrom IMHO. Of course the down side to using SD is the slow read-writes, so performance will take a hit for those apps that are on SD.

Angstrom-GPE
Lexar SD 1 GB
PQI 2GB CF
Ambicom WL1100 CF

I think now I've got what you meant to say. In contrast to SL-5000/5500, on SL-Cxxx servies you never store your files in RAM, only in flash.  The RAM is only for the running processes to live in. Now, about the flash space -- it is usually divided into two parts, one part is the one where the software lives, another one is for your files. With the pdaXrom installer, you have an option to choose how much for one, and how much for another, though there is some minimum for the first part, as all bundled with rom software must fit in it. The better idea is to use Ashley's installer (the thread is nearby) to create only one big ubiquitous partition. In that case you'll have programs and your files sharing the same space of around 58Mb. And if you install all additional soft to the SD/CF, I guess you would have much of it spared for your own files.
I'm just not sure if anyone has ever tried Ashley's installer on C700, check out that thread for the details.
