Are you running in landscape mode when you try this?  Maybe that would make a difference?  I thought there was a discussion on one of the old forums about this package and I thought that I heard someone got it working.  But, I don't recall either what was done to make it happen.  I looked over the c3270 manual on the web and don't see anything off hand that would help out.  c3270 manual

Has anyone tried using the -altscreen and -defscreen switches?

You could also try the -model switch (http://www.die.net/doc/linux/man/man1/c3270.1.html) which alters the required screen size (this may be how I tested it - can't remember, long time ago).
