App Availabilities
« on: February 04, 2004, 01:57:27 pm »
On http://www.killefiz.de I see a large number of apps listed but, it seems like only a handful are available for the 5600/XScale-based systems. I am looking to pick-up a 6000 model when they come out. And while there are apps that I will use (built-in and custom), I would have liked to see a more robust list of available apps for the 5600/6000\'s. Understanding of course that the 6000 are brand new units and all. Are there other places I should be looking?  :?:

most of the apps for the 5500 will work \"as-is\" on the 5600.  Since the screen sizes are the same most apps built for one works on the other.

In cases were it is not supported or does not work, often times there is a disclaimer from the author.
The 6000 and the Japan released (US available) C7xxx series on the other hand are diferent in more ways and hence there are softwares for the C7xxx series seperately (the 6000 is yet to be inroduced).

You would also want to check out handango.com -] linux section for more zaurus apps.

I think that you can safely assume that most 5500 apps will work on the 5600 as well.
The 6000 screen has the same resolution as the C7x and C8x. I would imagine that any 5500 apps that work on these will work on the 6000.
Some 5500 apps work on the C7x and C8x series in compatibility mode, whereby the device switches the screen to a \"low res\" mode. Some 5500 apps are optimised to run in high res mode. For instance, with SafeDee, when the app starts up, it detects the screen resolution and orientation, and automatically configures itself.

This may be a silly question but is there any reason why I can\'t compile sources on the Zaurus?

Nope.  not really, most of the software on these feeds is ported and not native code anyway.

The main problems you hit are screen sizing issues (less of a problem on the 640*480 machines).

The other problem is support for gui window managers and libraries that don\'t come with the stock zaurus.  Most of these have now been ported to the zaurus in many different formats.

Check out the x.11 rom and gentoo dist, in the x.11 forum on this site.

There are onboard compilers and cross compilers available for all the roms so it is all possible.

There seems to be 1 or 2  new ports being added to the list every day at the moment, especially for the x.11 rom.
