It would take a lot of work...

Everything would have to be recompiled for ARM9, it would have to have a different Kernel and reformatted to work with 320x240 screens. After all that, you would end up with something similar to pdaXrom, but likely slower.

Its a great Linux distro, I use it often, but it is not practical for the Zaurus.

Actually, it pretty much looks like Debian PocketWorkstation. It uses the i386 compiled libraries whereas PocketWorkstation uses armv5. It even uses 2.4.20 kernel! You could spend some time using apt-get install/remove to install and uninstall packages until the package list for PocketWorkstation looks the same as DSL (and it would also make PocketWorkstation similar in size to DSL), or just install FluxBox and emelFM (and the other apps listed on DSL), and uninstall gcc. Then do some customisation of the window manager menus so it looks just like DSL. Btw, it looks like Xqt because it uses the same window manager, ie Xqt by default uses blackbox but fluxbox is also available which is the enhanced version of blackbox with themes.

Something about this i like is its installer.  just click away and it downloads the program you want.  Very powerfull.

If you are interested into Z development you might also want to check out kopsis' Zaurus SDK kit. It is based on DSL. I had it setup for writing Z apps just before my C3000 died, but I have been busy with other things and had yet no time to develop anything yet.

yeah thanks..now this is definetly an option.  I tried various dev tools on the z with no success.  gona try this now.  man meanie......brings a tear to my eyes.  I stoped trying to develop because i just didnt have the time to find a solution and my linux box died.  from reading, it says that making an environment on the linux system is a two way road cuz you can kill the whole system?  WOW!

Cresho:

DSL can even be launched from within WinXP (using Qemu), so you could eliminate the boot process.

yeah i installed qemu a few days ago.  works like a charm though the performance is a bit slower than running it off the cd.  I may as well create a partition for this and use the boot manager off my bios to run it.

It changes fast enough I just install it on a 256MB usb stick and use the toram boot option to load the whole thing into ram when it boots. X is really fast from ram.

Sorry for the noob question, but can I use the DSL with SDK from Kopsis to compile X apps?  When I tried, it seems that the X libs were missing from the ARM environment...  Any clues?

I doubt it. I think kopsis' dsl qemu stuff is qtopia centered.

try OE oz/gpe or pdaxrom if you want to do x

Thanks ADF.  I need to be able to sync with outlook 2003, and I must admit that I like the Cacko rom...  However, I do want to be able to cross compile X applications for the Zaurus as I'm running X/Qt.  Any thoughts on whether I should or shouldn't do that, or should I just try to compile on the Z?

how easy is it to compile x stuff in xqt?  it is prettystraightforward in pdax. koen might be able to tell you about comparable stuff in gpe

I'm running PdaXRom on my 1000 - it is excellent in terms of being a portable linux workstation.  I would like to get opera working for it, and have it syncing with outlook, but I want everything
