Connecting To The Internet From The Z Via Windows

Hi:

Can I connect to the Internet, i.e. read webpages etc., when I connect the Zaurus by the serial cable to a Windows PC, which is connected to the web?

What do I have to do to make this possible?

Hmmm... Since no one responded it seems it's not something easy to do.

Or is it really so? I would've thought that it wouldn't be something hard to do? Or am I missing something obvious?

It is actually very easy to do (the lack of replies is probably a combo of this fact and the fact that this has been explained before).

Make sure you can ping your Z, etc., from the PC, then enable internet connection sharing (which will set up the routing), then it should just work (did for me anyway).

Yes, I can ping the Z from the PC.

How do I enable Internet connection sharing, is this on the Z, or somewhere in Windows?

Internet connection sharing is somewhere in Windows, but don't ask me where 'cause I don't do windows.

iirc there's a wizard in there somewhere (look on the sidebar in the network connections page under control panel) - it asks you which network adaptors you want to share (so make sure you have your Z plugged in when you do this).

I've made some progress, but still I'm missing something. It doesn't seem so completely intuitive to me...

I've followed this guide

I changed the USB Sync IP / Zaurus manager IPs to 192.168.0.100 in the PC Link settings on the Zaurus.

Then the guide says:

I'm not sure if this is necessary, but I manually pointed the Z adapter's TCP/IP settings to point to my router (192.168.1.1) for DNS and entered the IP of my WinXP box (192.168.1.100) for the default gateway

which I don't know what exactly means. How to set this up on the Windows PC.

So didn't do this.

Also found no wizard in the Network settings on the PC to setup Internet Connection Sharing, but enabled it by right clicking on the network connection shortcut and selecting to enable the sharing.

Resultingly, I could ping the PC from the Z, I could ping the Z from the PC.

Moreover, I could ping google.com from the Z. However, couldn't ping the DNS servers (seen when running ipconfig /all on the PC, and entered in the /etc/resolve.conf on the Z) no reply.

In this case, the guide says:

3. From your Zaurus ping your router (or Dial-up DNS Server). Check your Internet sharing settings on your desktop and your gateway settings on your Zaurus.

What do you check in the Internet sharings? And howe do you check the Gateway settings on the Z. Where is this?

Then in Opera on the Z google.com wouldn't open up. When I try to connect to google.com in Netfront it say it needs to connect to the network so no luck there.

Maybe I have to configure some Network connection in the Network settings on the Zaurus? Is this it? Which one then?

I must be closer, but just can't solve this...

It means to set the gateway IP address on the Zaurus to the same address as your PC uses, however you say you can ping google so you must have done this anyway.

If you can ping google.com, then you have dns anyway, so don't worry about it. Or did you mean you could ping google.com's IP address directly? If so what does /etc/resolve.conf have in it?

What was the error?

Can you wget a file from the 'net? This would rule out connection difficulties and place the blame on the software (Opera & NetFront).

OK, solved it.

It was a really stupid thing this time on my part  

The PC firewall was blocking the outbound access tries of the Z. Disabled the firewall and all goes well... Opera connects...

However the Netfront still says, it's not connected to a network. Why is this? Well, in any way, Opera works so fine...

You have to tell Qtopia that you have a network connection (there's a QCOP call iirc) because NetFront checks for this.
