Iwconfig Problems Under Rc12

It would appear that there is a iwconfig and wlan driver mismatch on the SL-6000/tosa under rc12

iwconfig wlan0 essid one
Error for wireless request "Set ESSID" (8B1A) :
    SET failed on device wlan0 ; Operation not supported.


or is this not meant to work ??

this appears to break the functionality of the network.py script.....

It is the same for me,
I can't  use the iwconfig command. I'd like for example to set the monitor mode, ad hoc mode etc...
