Newbie Here -- With A Few Questions

Hey community!

I just got a C1000 from Price Japan yesterday (AWESOME customer service by the way) and have already installed pdaxrom. I did some research (regarding the various roms) for a few weeks before deciding that pdaxrom would be best for me.

Sooooo, now I have it, and I have a few questions:

1. I really need a PIM application. Something simple is fine. All I want is to be able to store names, numbers, and addresses, and a simple "to do" list would be awesome too. I've tried installing kdepim from the feed, but it doesn't show-up in the launcher. Is there another dependency I'm missing, or is there a smaller, easier PIM application currently available?

2. How do you guys know what package is what in the feeds? They're just labeled by package names, with no descriptions. I can google most of them and get a description by finding the particular project's home page, but it would take me literally DAYS to look up every package. Is there a site that indexes what these packages do?

Just take a look here : http://mail.pdaxrom.org/contrib/

Looking for simple pim : check Xromer's and ZDevil's feeds.

When browsing the feeds, you can check the descriptions.

BTW : after installing : leave X and startx : can you see the launchers now ?

If I'm not mistaken, a proper feed directory contains a listing of all the packages along with short descriptions...

I was previously using the [a href=\"http://mail.pdaxrom.org/1.1.0beta1/Zaurus-C1000-C3100/feed/]http://mail.pdaxrom.org/1.1.0beta1/Zaurus-C1000-C3100/feed/[/url] URL, and there's NO descriptions there

Yes indeed.  It has a text file called Packages.  There is also a file called Filelist that contains a list of all the files in each package.  This can be really useful to search through if you know that you need a certain file and want to find out where you can get it.

I second Xromer's efforts with gpe-pim. Most things are working now except wakeup from suspend on alarms, and this is very nearly done. It's heaps faster than kopi too!

I think I like fltdj, which is on the main feed IIRC.  It is pretty simple, but it works.  Gpe-calendar (and others) are available, but I had a lot of migrating appointments when I used that on OZ before I got my 3100 and pdaXrom.  This seems to keep appointments where they were -- on the Z at least.  I compiled it for my desktop, shipped the appointment files over, and the dates were all wrong by several days.  Oh well.  I guess I just use the Zaurus for appointments.

Kde's scheduler is available also, but IMNSHO is a resource hog on a machine for which that matters.

Read the "Packages" file at the top of the feed, when looking at it in a web browser.  That at least gives some description of the packages.
