Compatibilty Of Ipks For Different Pdaxrom Builts
« on: December 05, 2006, 08:10:18 am »
Hi,

I am thinking about changing from cacko to pdaXrom as I like the desktop-like look and feel and the presence of the software to which I am used from my debian X86 box.
I heard that the newest pdaXrom release is still unstable so I would install beta3 to my C1000.
Now one question: The packages from the beta3 feed are usable anyway. But can I install also packages from the newer feeds or custom packages which are built for an newer version?
How can I find out for which version a ipk is built?
Is there a stable successor for the newest pdaXrom version coming soon?
I would not flash beta3 if I know that the new version is coming in some days...

Thanks for helping...

Sharp C1000 with pdaXii13 ---  Palmax PD1100 with DSL-Linux + a lot of USB/CF/PCMCIA stuff for both

I would not hold out for a new version just yet, it appears there are quite a few issues that are being worked on and just because a version is "new" doesn't mean it's better, beta4 and the recent r121 are only recommended for experienced "testers" as things may go wrong and other things may not work at all.

Beta3 is still the current most stable release as you will discover by reading up a little, although I believe there are issues with the C1000, you will have to look in the forums for this as I don't have one.

As for package compatibility, most of the time packages will work on across versions but you can test it and see and if it doesn't work, remove it. Beta 3 has an awesome selection of precompiled packages to choose from so you wil be fine there.

And compiling your own is documented somewhere around here too.

One final note: Before you commit to running pdaxrom, be sure to realise that it is beta, and it may take more effort to get things working than sharp/cacko. But as most people here would tell you, it's worth it in the end

Hi,

I have no problem to fiddle around if at the end there is a chance to get a working result.
I am using Linux on my desktop since kernel 0.9x in combination with my 486 and installing Slackware was really not straight forward in that time ;-).
But I am not a software-programmer so as soon as it gets really hard then I have no good chance.

BTW: I see that on the last unstable version Ekiga is running. Anyone tried this on beta3?
As far as I can see in the forum, kphone does not give good results due to pdaXrom uses esound.

Switching to pdaXrom makes only sense to me if I get a decend softphone running as I would use the Zaurus often when I travel...
