If it's just the cables, I'll send it to sharp to repair. I don't feel competent to attempt it myself. If they want much more than $50, I'll consider buying a new 6000. I'm using my old 5500 but miss the 6000 a lot!

Are you the original owner of your 6000, or was is "pre-loved", and if so could it have been opened up before?
The 6000 is a solid beast and doesn't flex in use (or only a tiny amount) so I don't see how the cable could break.
It's quite possible that that the cables are merely a little bit loose and the contacts need cleaning.
When I dismantled and reassembled mine, it took two goes before I got a decent contact, the 2nd time I cleaned them with an alcohol rub.
